Ive researched more about sound Rob, seems alot of people are using external sound recorders like the Zoom h4n. That costs 300 quid though but there are similar things for cheaper with less features. I might go down that route. I need to research it a bit more.

yes thers a bit more to sound than i thought, my cable might come tomorrow so a can then try a few things.
i might make a parabolic and fit my mic into it to try and focus the sound from a single bird or at least get more sound from a single bird .
This might cut or over power the sounds we dont want .

If you look at your 7D videos through zoom browser ex and click the information you can see the exif.
Mine are mainly done in 1080p 24fps. at 1/50th, iso200 (I have htp enabled) and whatever aperture gives me the correct exposure.

Tried that but will not show exif on movie only on still ?

I did this movie soon after I got the 7d in manual 400 ISO 400mm f11 thats all I can remember

Sorry I had another look.
in zoom browser ex select the video then go to the preview tab.
In the bottom right hand corner should be a "shooting information" window.
The info is in there but i found if you have renamed your video in windows or anything but zoombrowser then the exif disappears.

It did not work for me, I only have one vid in the computer from the 7d which has its original file name, all I have done is is moved it to a file in my computer, but keeps stating 'No information' will try out a new video later see what happens to the exif information. cheers anyway.

Just download the video to your Mac (you can use the application called Image Capture for this, either via a card reader or via your camera's USB cable) and then edit it with the application called imovie....................

Thanks, tried it works a treat. Now just need to get out birding.

What is the best format to convert the files to for uploading. I can do quite a few different formats but can't decide on the best. AVI. Mpeg 2 or 4. H264. WMV HD quality. MOV and quite a few others.

Videoing is very addictive hampers.. book some time off work! :)

Luckily I'm retired. Off to Dumfries and Galloway in a couple of weeks so hope to try it out extensively there, if not before.
I'm a little concerned about manual focussing the moving subjects though. Can see no particular problems with static or moving across the frame to backwards and forwards may pose difficulties I guess, just depends on how easy it is to see the screen when outside. I've never used LiveView on my cameras, always preferred to use the viewfinder. Also can't make my mind up on buying a microphone, or, remove the sound all together afterwards. Have done plenty of video before but the camera has always autofocussed.

Cheers and thanks for the advice I am looking forward to using video now, thanks in no small part to the examples posted on here, as well as stills. All not bad when I was adamant that I wasn't interested in having video on a dslr!

Christine, It depends what your saving for. If your going for to upload to youtube/vimeo etc then go for h264 at a bitrate of 5-8mbps
Thats what those sites recommend.

hampers I was out today following moving Redshanks and its not that hard to be manually focusing with them on the move. Sometimes i was slightly out but could get it back in again quite quickly.
Im sure with practice that sort of thing will become second nature. (hopefully :) )
As for the microphone rob bought one and is testing it. I think i might go down the route of an external recorder with a dead cat on the end.
(If i can find one for under 100 quid)

Think I'll wait and see the results from other users before buying on. As a matter of interest how do you sync an external recording to the video?

Im still waiting for my cable ,but i did test it yesterday out on the marsh, i made a cover out of fur type fabric and it cut a lot of wind noise down .
I have a feeling that with the ex lead this mic is going to work quite well .

Cool Rob, Im very interested to hear how your tests go.

Hampers you just need to make a sound spike at the start. (I think thats what clapperboards are for in films)

Then when your editing your video you bring in your external sound file
match the sound spike up to the same spike on the cameras sound file
then delete the cameras sound track.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind. Did think about a parabolic microphone, until I saw I found out how much they are. Mate of mine has a small Sony but doesn't seem to be in production now.
