Dungeness in October No longer September but had another visit to Dunge today....cold with bitter bitter north wind. Things have definitely calmed down. The cranes have again moved on; someone said to Walland Marsh. Highlights of today were a black tern seen very well hawking from the Firth hide. Most of the interesting birds were seen from the ARC hide. A very obliging young peregrine was bird of the day...a real character; an adolescent who had no qualms about challenging a marsh harrier more than once. He/she sent everything up several times, didn't manage to catch anything despite trying......got a lot to learn, this one. At least five different marsh harriers were seen at various points. Anyone know if they've bred here this year? The gorgeous pintails were very evident and close to the ARC hide and a group of ru*** ducks were on the far side. Waders were noticibly absent, only one snipe. The return journey took in Pett; lots of birds around but coastal defence work with big lorries and diggers opposite the pools made for unfriendly, if not to say dangerous, viewing.:eek!: The short stop saw two little stint which were the highlight.
