Good numbers of birds at Whitburn Steel this evening: 2 adult Med Gulls, Goosander, 3000+ Golden Plover, Grey Plover, 9 Bar-wits and 250+ Redshank. Also plenty of seaweed there, so good feeding for the Turnstones, and at least 12 Rock Pipits present.

Great to see field work and surveys being given such a major role in the 'new' DBC. Let's hope it gets some of the 'lost sheep' (ex-members) back involved to take the club forward. Once they get the next annual report (by the end of the year hopefully) and a couple more bulletins, they'll be flocking back.

Nice photos Russkie - there's certainly a 'wow' factor when you see the flock twisting and wheeling over the coastline, especially on a decent day with blue skies.

Quiet at Whitburn today, although 2 lucky birders had a 'gull double' - a juv Sabs north very close in at 09.45 and an adult Glaucous at 11.00.

DBC Conservation Officer dealing with (DWT & Defra) about threats to a pond which has started to be infilled on South Tyneside. (often holds 100+ Teal)

Several local DBC members (instigated & organised by Russkie) have come forward to do a full survey of a farm nr Hetton. Currently under stewardship, but farmer keen to do more for birds, excellent potential here to help DBAP species like Corn Bunting, Tree Sparrow, Bullfinch & Barn Owl.
NB. Large no's of Nest Boxes are required asap for this project....

Other species specific surveys in 2006 may include Dabchick, Kingfisher, Nuthatch... any views or ideas on Projects or Surveys you'd like to see, EMail me.

Details are also required for all & any existing nest box schemes (20 plus boxes) as we have little data on these.

& of course the Long-eared Owl survey will run again, starting in the New Year (for those of you who maybe ............ didnt hear about it last year.... ;-)

1000 mixed gulls over the Wear / Landfill at Low Willington, where Iceland was seen several times last year.

ringtail Hen Harrier favouring The Long Drag late afternoons.

hi denbee

they were in the field behind the observatory [sea watching hut !!] by the conservation area.

funny thing happened there today - i heard call that i thought might be a strange warbler migrant - like a scratching / squeeling sound for about 5 mins - bit whitethroatish - anyway i searched the grass and bushes and it turns out it was a pair of WEASELS fighting. they were so engrossed i got to within about 6 inches and managed to scare the bigger one off - so i hope i saved the little one from being savaged - nice sighting thou.
cheers

swift sp. seen over Cornthwaite Park, Whitburn this morning. Late swifts are always worth checking out, so anyone in the area over the weekend, keep your eyes skyward....

Dawdon/Hawthorn today

Had a small flock of Twite (20 plus 5 Linnet) at the carpark at Dawdon Blast Beach today. There is a fenced-off area behind the car-park and they were in there. Also a Ring Ouzel at Hawthorn Quarry.

Also, there was a flock of seven swan sp. (Mute or Whooper on size I suppose) flying south about 500 yds off shore at 3.00pm past the blast beach. I only had my bins - did anyone else see them and if so, can you tell me what they were!!?? :stuck:

Cheers

Steve

There's a report on the Whitburn Birding site of 7 Whooper Swans flying past today, doesn't give a time so couldn't say if they were the same birds.
