Dormans Pool today - 16:15 Short-eared Owl by the car park. Spent quite a while around before being mobbed by a Crow. SEO made the Crow regret it's impertinence by harrying it into the distance.

Also present Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

As I was heading home past the fire station a female Marsh Harrier crossed the road ahead of me going towards Dormans Pool so I turned around headed back there. It was present 16:30 through to 17:30 hunting over the north end of the reeds, disappearing into the reeds a couple of times for 20 minutes - most likely to feed. Harried by a Crow as well. Hopefully it will stick around a while.

Can't comment on the thinking around moving the foliage tho???
I wasnt going to make a reply to this yet because as sure as God made little green apples it will turn rapidly into a non productive "discussion"
However the above comment has forced me to do so.
Paul - I NEVER moved ANY foliage
As innocent as your comment was it will soon be a case of Chinese whispers and before long I will have taken the nest out of the tree, taken it home and photographed it under studio conditions.
As was elequenty put to me earlier on the phone - I know nothing about birds. I agree and have always stated that. I have tried to learn more though by asking questions only to find, in general those, questions are ignored.
I do however know how to conduct myself around wildlife and would never knowlingly do something to compromise any creatures well being.
I can only repeat the circumstances around the taking of the nest photo.
The nest was in full view from the path leading to the feeding station, no foliage in front of it, no long grass - nothing.
The colour of the nest meant it was very easily spotted.
I setup my little chair, tripod etc on the path 50 yards away from the nest and took the photos.
I DIDN'T approach the nest before hand and I didn't move anything to make it easier to get photos. I took photos exactly as the nest was.
It was after I had taken the photos I wanted that I decided (rightly or wrongly) to at least try and make the nest a little less obvious, and it is this action which I presume has annoyed certain people immensely.
I made the decision to stick 3 bulrushes into the ground a yard or so in front of the nest site and in line with position it could be seen from the path. I felt that at least that would hide the nest a little. I did this when both birds had left the nest and afterwards I returned to my chair and watched until I was sure the birds returned - they did.

Now I am content in my own mind that what I did in no way disturbed or worried the birds. Nor do I feel I did anything to compromise the nest. If others are shocked or angry at those actions then I can only apologise for doing something they find objectionable.

I now find myself in a situation where I have people phoning me and PMing me saying I did nothing wrong and at the same time reading posts from people who genuinely feel upset and angry.

The knowledge on this forum is staggering and I dont share any of that in any shape or form - what I tried to do was simply be part of the community by sharing the only aspect of birding that I can do reasonably well and that is take photos.
If the integrity of the photos then becomes an issue then obviously I'm quite happy not to participate.

To be honest I would rather anyone wishing to condemn me or speak their mind did so via PM as I really dont see why the forum in general should suffer.
I'll happily take your comments on the chin if you wish to express them.

Blimey J.Bee, didn't mean to offend, I love yor pix
You didn't Paul, I just wanted to squash the comment before moving the foliage became cutting away branches then removing the nest totally.
I realise you didnt mean offence.

JBee,

Hi there, I guess I'm one of those who PM'd you to find out where the feeding station was and I thank you for your reply. I enjoyed your pics and it never crossed my mind to think you were in any way irresponsible.

I can't imagine anyone who reads this board would use any information in any negative way. I'm guessing any disturbance, if any, would more likely to be from , should we say locals.

You seem a fair guy who's just trying to help, I enjoy reading your posts and viewing your pics - keep it up!

Phew!

I'm not getting involved in this, just to say I think we all have the welfare and study of birds as our priority, the forecast is for a nice day and my tree sparrows are nesting. Confict is a bugger unless yor the scroat who stole the barn owl box!!!
Sweet dreams all, tomorrow is another day.

Can we put this subject to bed now please. It isn't doing anyone any good and is putting the good name of this thread and the bird club at risk. We are only human and do the things that we do because we believe it is right, if we make mistakes we learn from them. Jbee meant no harm to the birds and only had their best interests at heart. Lets talk about the birds and forget about what's gone on in the past.

Just a beginner!
Mentioned the dartford warbler on the site a few times, just to explain, about 20 yrs ago my pal who was a serious birder and I had a holiday in the new forest to allow me to train for the London marathon while he searched for said bird. I was doing about 20 mile a day but we saw the D.W. plus green woodpeckers etc and that got me hooked. Didn't return to birding until recently and sadly my pal ( who we named daughter after) died last year.
This now fat old git did 2.41 in the event, bear that in mind while watching on tv on sunday!
I know it's nowt to do with birding but perhaps explains how I come to be here and the journey's we all have to take?
Bottle is almost empty!

The day I decide not to take the big lens because of poor weather and CW points out GCG displaying on the other side of the big lake.
Hence crap photo cropped heavily.

Nice behavioural pic John. Which female could fail to be impressed by a huge wet piece of pond weed! A tasty small fish I could understand, but a huge wet bit of slimey stuff?!

Seawatching was productive at Whitburn before work this morning. Great Northern Diver flew north, 7 wildfowl species included Goosanders and R-b Merganser, 500+ auks and 100+ Gannets in 1.5 hours, and 20 Sandwich and 1 Arctic Tern. PH also had Glaucous Gull north after I left.

Got to work yesterday to find a work colleague walking round with a video camera showing everyone something she'd recorded on it that morning. Being the nosey person I am I asked about it and was shown a few mins of footage of a L.E.O sitting in a tree at the bottom of her garden and 4 GSW on her feeders... how jealous was I......

PS the stork is probably getting ready for me--lol

White Stork

At last I found a bit of time to get out and couldn`t resist seeing if the White Stork was still around - So off to Bishop Middleham.
Spotted it as soon as I got out of the car, thanks to a couple of crows mobbing it about 100 feet up.
Had a full walk around Castle lake and saw,
Goldfinch
Greenfinch
Yellowhammer
Corn Bunting
Reed Bunting
Linnet
Skylark
Meadow Pipit
Shelduck
Gadwall
Heron
White Stork
Possible Little Owl as it flew in to bushes - couldnt find it again tho.
Nice morning stroll and met a few nice people too.

JBEE - Keep it up, you have provided excellent pics on here and from what I understand a good feeding station /screen so others can enjoy that area. It just shows no matter how hard you try, someone will always find fault. Well Done!!
Heres some rubbish photos of the stork - even compared to JBees "rubbish" pics - hehe.

Can anyone give me directions to Castle Lake? Never been and fancy going to see if stork still there tomorrow. May head over to Low Barns whilst in that area.
Is there anywhere else close to there people would recommend?
Cheers
