OK - It's up to you whether you believe this:

14.20 this afternoon I was driving along the road between Woodland and Egglestone and saw a Golden Eagle. No, I wasnt seeing things and I have checked with my bird books since I came home. Sadly I couldnt get a pic as was leading a party of overseas visitors at the time so couldn't pull over and park. It was low and huge!!

West of Transporter Bridge.

Had lunchtime walk along the just west of the Transporter Bridge, saw flock of 20ish siskin 6 long tailed tit in the bushes, distrurbed a kingfisher which flew across the river, 2 RB mergansers on the river, 2 Curlews flying down river, but most unusual there were 2 Guillemots - i would not expect them so far up the river.
Also there were 3 common seals - 1 of which was thrashing a salmon about trying to spit it open - salmon was about 6 -10lb approx. Not bad for such an industrial stretch of river.

A golden eagle near Egglestone, any other reports of this, as I am heading up that way at the weekend. I know buzzards are seen daily up in this area and its an excellent place for raptors - have seen buzzard, Red Kites, Merlin, Hobby, Sparrowhawks, and a Short Eared Owl in this area, but a Golden Eagle would be a real bonus. Although it has probably already gone.

Stranger birds have been seen in stranger places. It may well be an escapee.
Are there any other reports?

Yes I was over the moon Jason,I thought it was a Pied Blackbird and nearly passed it by until I looked at through bins, your right about looking around the Quarry areas I've seen Wrynecks ,Ortolan Buntings not to mention other wildlife like Orchids and Bats.I didn't have time for Barred Warbler but next time i'm off work I'll be looking!

Just a beginner!
Blimey, can't compete with a golden eagle (although I did see one earlier in the year near Braemar). Just back from walking my dogs & had a real fright. Walking near a tree when I heard this almighty great screetch! It went on for a few mins before flying off. Was convinced I had heard a barn owl but then checking on the DBC website on the downloads of calls I'm not convinced?
Anyway, now showered and the washing machine is going!
Just wish I was better at i.d.
Cheers

Cheers for that, Steve. Might try and get over after work (which reminds me: I shouldn't really keep going on the Bird Forum - it's not what they pay me for!!!).

Seaton Snook was a little on the quiet side over lunchtime. A shame I wasn't out a little later when the skies brightened.

A few Curlew on Seaton Common and a single Redwing in the migrant bushes.

Several Curlew alongside Greatham Creek also a single Grey Plover, a single RB Merganser, Oystercatcher c.50 and several Redshank. Several Guillemot and Razorbill and Cormorant on the sea. The most interesting find were Arctic Tern x9 feeding just off the edge of the beach.

DBC indoor meeting - 18 October

Just a reminder about the next DBC indoor meeting. Next Thursday (18 October), the meeting will be at Swalwell Cricket Club in the Lower Derwent Valley, Gateshead. (click here for a location map). The talk promises to be a good one - Birds of Ecuador by Santiago Bejarano. There will also be the usual social side (an excellent cheap pint here!), club news, time to chat with other club members/the committee, voice your opinions on the club and what's happening with the birds in Durham etc. Doors open from 7.00, things get going around 7.30pm.

This is a new locality for meetings. We're hoping that birders in the Gateshead/Newcastle area will show their support and attend. If we get a decent turnout, then it's obviously worth the DBC planning more events in the Gateshead area. It's a free event and non-members are more than welcome.

Come on lads and lasses. It's a free night out, cheap beer, an excellent talk and slide show and within easy distance for many Birdforum members. Please show your support. Thanks.
