An admirer of Kelly Brooks' talents.
Pleasant hour with CW at the Bogs this morning showing a friend his first Water Rail. Had to explain to my friend that Water Rails are not usually so obliging!

Barred warbler still in the hedge on the Leas early afternoon. Very mobile, giving regular but tantalisingly brief views.

A little more success with the Merlin on Seaton Common this morning. Most days it's been around, but seldom very close. This morning it was hunting along the fence line by the ditch coming towards the road. It came within c.60yds today.

Teesdale Area

First stop was briefly at Kinninvie to see if the buzzards were about. Saw a bird sat on top of a bush about 150 yards away - got the bins on it and surprised to see it was a Black Grouse eating the berries. Have seen 1 here about a year ago and good to see there are still some around.
Drove up through Blackton and on to the Egglestone Moor road saw a number of birds soaring on the ridge these turned out to be 4 Buzzards, 2 Ravens, and a Peregrine annoying the hell out of everything in the air. These were later joined by 2 Red Kites an amazing sight.
So I parked up and had a walk up the moor the Buzzards had already moved across the moor but 1 red kite remained along with the Ravens. The kite kept a distance between me and it but the Ravens appeared to be curious. The peregrine reappeared and had another go at the Kite which showed amazing arial display.
Moved down to Low Barns for a search for Tawnies but no luck - plenty of Redwing there though

I am new to birding and new to the area.I was up on the moor between Woodland and Egglestone yesterday and saw a large raptor and I wasn`t sure if it was a Red Kite or a Buzzard. All I could see was a brownish under side with a whiteish stripe from wing tip too body.It was my first time up there and had a great time

Hi Geordie,

Welcome to the forum. It's a bit difficult to tell what you saw from your description but it sounds like a Buzzard to me.

You should find lots of useful site and sightings information on this forum to keep you going in your new hobby!

Cheers,

Had a tour about this afternoon, first stop Back Salthome ,well over a thousand Golden Plover there, a Little Stint, Ruff and single Egyptian and Barnacle Geese. 30 Pink footed Geese also nearby.
Next had a look in Seaton Snook where 4 Arctic Terns were still hanging about, a couple of Grey Plovers and 8 Mergansers.
Finally popped round Hartlepool Headland . Around 30 Guillemot close in, and the usual Purple Sandpipers and Rock Pipits. More unusual was a Kingfisher flying along the coast 100 yards offshore, before landing halfway along the pier.

I must have just missed you Derek. I was on the Headland 4:00pm-5:00pm. I was along at the north end of Marine Drive. Between the outfall pipe and the end of the promenade five RT Diver were feeding along the edge of the breaking wavess. A little further out were Common Scoter c.40 and Eider 50+. Plenty of Oystercatcher, Sanderling, Knot, Redshank, Turnstone and Purple SAndpiper along the water's edge plus several Arcitc Tern feeding insode the breakers.

Thanks Steve. I am disabled with walking difficulties and so most of my bird watching/photography will be from a car or places with hides like Low Barns.Went to Cowpen Bewley Wildlife Park recently which is also laid out well for people with wheelchairs/mobility scooters.

What's the best way to get to Tees marshes? I'm often working in the Stockton / Middlesboro / Billingham area & could check out before or after work.
