There seems to be plenty of food for it in the Churchyard so hopefully it may still be hanging around when you come back. Can't your Dad or another relative bring you down as soon as school comes out as it is still light down here until about 5 o clock.

as i said , my dad is at work . but there is no use crying over spilt milk

Yeah the stoat seems to have a longer body - i had a shot as the "steasel" jumped but its tail was totally hidden so not much better off - the only thing i would say is that it did seem on the small side for a stoat - i think
thanks for your help.

Long-eared Owl
Dusk;
a male singing & then very active in a series of wing clap flight displays, while the female called from likely nesting area.
Linnet also singing today.
2 Whooper Swan south.
small passage of Shoveller at present.
Pair of Willow tits at an isolated rural garden feeding station yesterday.
Heron activity very much on the up - several in recent days stalking the grasslands - probably taking more mammals than amphibians at the moment though.
Got a few more Barn owl boxes up today, thanks to Den.
We picked 2 likely looking isolated mature hedgerow trees in seperate areas & quite by chance found Barn owl pellets at both of them! Hopefully a good omen..... o:D

I fell i should add a treecreeper shot like everybody else. As mine were taken on the other side of the water i'll not bother.

Could somebody please advise me where the best place to look for Goshawk is in hamsterley forest. Is it just a case of finding a hill and pitching up for the day?

That's just about it. The road along the south side of the forest between Hamsterley village and Woodland near the moutain bike course gives a pretty good view over a wide area.

Hume's Leaf Warbler still present at Norton this morning so Marmot managed to catch up with it today - despite the dull conditions. Also present were Blackcap m&f, Goldfinch, Long-tailed Tit, Wren, Robin, Chaffinch, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Blue Tit and a couple of Grey Squirrels.

Hi,

Any updates on the Hume's Warbler and Yellow-browed Warbler would be great as I am planning a trip across on Sunday.

Swarm of Starlings in Darlington

For the last 2 nights at least there has been a huge gathering of starlings in Darlington, putting on a wonderful display like a huge shoal of fish.
I estimate between 8 to 10 thousand but am not good at estimating, could be more - they fill the sky.
I have seen them at 4:45 both evenings as they fly round in smaller groups and sometime joining to be one large flock. It is impressive
They are in Welbeck Avenue on the north side of Darlington if anyone fancies the sight

For info the Humes and Yellow-browed Warbler are one and the same. It was originally ID as YBW and then found to be a Hume's Warbler. I went today and managed to see it, very flighty and small. [no, not a description of me]

The Church is easy to find at Norton Green near the Duck Pond. If of any interest and looking for something to eat, the Chip shop further along the High Street has a good reputation. [but doubt if it would be open on a Sunday though]

Very surprised that you a Northumberland birder whats to see Goshawks at Hamsterlely when you have the likes of Kielder and Harwood to go and see them.Certainly more Goshawks in Northumberland than in Durham.

Chiffchaff appearing today, possibly a local winterer thats started to move on ?
Shoveller at another site today, certainly one the species thats moves through here as an early spring migrant.
Long-eareds, a different story altogether to yesterday at dusk...
female calling only very infrequently from 17:40 & no vocalizations from the male.
2 males were active in flight seen briefly wing clapping - flight lower & faster than usual w/c flight. Seemed like one may have been chasing the other off..?
Time ran out before we saw anything else happen.
Hen Harrier seen again yesterday at a local site.

Aye, you're right. I've heard recent reports of Gos in the northern green belt of newcastle!!
I guess it does look a bit daft. I'll explain...
I'm moved down to Sunderland about nine months ago. I'll be back in god's own land (where the sun always shines) in about a month or so. Although i don't really keep lists as such (just mental) i want to clock up as many species as i can before i return.
