Rare and scarce birds in the autumn tend to hang around a lot longer than they do in the spring making them easier to see because they spend time feeding and building up there fat reserves for there migration. In the spring they what to get to there breeding grounds as quick as possible thats why they dont hang around for long.Wrynecks in the autumn tend to be long stayers like the Marsden Quarry bird which stayed for 7 days in August 04.Thats the nature of twitching scarce birds isnt it Ian ? !
If you want 'em, you've generally gotta get there sharpish.:t:
My point to "Jumpin 4 Joy" whoever she is, is that the probability of still being able to see the bird after 4days is pretty slim... to say the least.
As to your point about dropping of hats, i was fortunate enough to have the finder phone me upon him locating the bird... it just so happened i was packing up at work & about to head home through Hetton.
Very many people did manage to see the Wryneck (7AM-8PM ) both before, during & after work
Im sure next time theres a Wryneck in Co.Durham, certain people will do their upmost to try to ensure as many people as possible have a good chance of seeing it

Have to say it certainly does'nt always work that way birds staying round longer in the autumn but as a general rule they do.Thanks Martin
Armed with that knowledge, i'm confident that i'll be able to wait untill the end of this week before i go for a look at this Rainton bird
:-O

Don't get lippy pal.
Yesterday it was next to the railway lines tunnel then it flew towards the side with the big pub.
I was at RM all afternoon yesterday, had a good ole work around. Bumped into a few birders, None of which mentioned a Wryneck? Strange
