Hi,

why does the Durham Bird Club hide its Bird Information from non members? To me this seems against the spirit of the hobby. Surely the aim of the Club should be to share information with all rather than keep it to themselves

Jamie

COASTAL CONSERVATION GROUP - TURNED OUT NICE AGAIN
Hi all,

I'm having trouble accessing the DBC website - this appears to be since the recent change of password - I understand it's case sensitive but still no luck with it.

Please PM me if you can help - thanks in advance.

Cheers, Dougie.

Several members mentioned it today, and this could be the case.

I`m not trying to be clever but if any dedicated birdwatcher between the Tyne and the Tees is interested in the sightings/information etc of Birds in Durham, then surely they would already be members of Durham Bird Club anyway .:news:

Hi,

Im currently in the Teesmouth Bird Blub and RSPB and rarely stray past the boundries covered by this TBC so I am quite happy with just that but recently had been considering joining because I like "The Lek" but it just takes time to get round to it. Making the sightings secure probably has the reverse effect and makes me less likely to join as I dislike it when things like this occur.

Surely the club should be friendly and offer information to all and then hope that people wish to join them (as the TBC does) for what they stand for rather than trying to force them to join by withholding informartion from them....

Regards,
Jamie

No need for phone calls it's been on the TBC sightings page since mid-morning - which is open for every online birdwatcher to view! ;)

North Gare Pier - 10:30am - Snow Bunting c.50 (flock of 30 and one of 20) sat in amongst the rocks by the end normally covered by the tide. RT Diver x3, BT Diver x1, RB Merganser c.9, Common Scoter x6. Kestrel, Oystercatcher, Redshank, Cormorant and several Shag.

I was watching the Snow Buntings when I looked around to see a Kestrel skimming the beach less than 1m above the sand and 10m from me heading towards the Snow Buntings - the last I saw of them as they disappeared into the dunes towards Seaton Snook.

Apparently the Merlin was sat on the roadside fence again a minute or so before I arrived. Curlew c.12, Wigeon c.12 and Greylag Goose x4 sat on the Common though distant.

Hetton Lyons (Big Lake)
Talking to a guy who walks his dog around there morning and night.
This morning he found the local heron with its (in his words) head blasted off.
First the swans, now the heron - what sick morons get pleasure from this.

There were upto 50 Waxwings in the usual housing estate in Jarrow this lunchtime.

Cheers Jason :t::t:.
Called there today with the missus and we saw at least 80 amongst the trees:t:,
This was around 10.00am. Also 1/2 doz thrushes which kept chasing the waxwings from the berry trees.
This was in a street called Pearson Place.
They were around for about 15mins until the bin motor came and flushed the lot.
Hopefully will have a few pics to post when I sort them.

I have nothing to do with DBC other than being a member, so i will let someone else explain why the DBC's Bird News service is in a Members only Section of the website.

( ....... Perhaps( ;) ) one of the reasons the DBC's "Bird News - Latest" is for members only, is to stop unknown non-member mystery birders from posting fictitious reports ;)

As a rule I do check both forums early morning, however my server was down so pleased that John rang me re this sighting.
May invest in joining BirdGuides Messaging Service to overcome any further problems with server.

It's autumn all the berries, nuts and seed crops have ripened so there is an abundance of natrual food available, they'll all be back in your garden by Christmas, also bird numbers are down significantly this year due to the very wet spring and summer we had. The local bird ringing group have told me it's the worst year they have ever had for numbers.

Ian, i think most folks i know would make a few calls to check if birds listed on TBC sightings page were bona-fide reports ;)

Theres certainly many pros & cons to internet birding....

BirdGuides details Cattle Egret at Saltholme this morning....

It's just a shame that DBC once had a reputation for being open and friendly to birders but now they've turned insular.

I can appreciate the forums section being for members only but not the sightings page. Maybe restricted to members only to add sightings but it should be open for anyone to view.

Blue-winged Teal is still there as well as the Cattle Egret.
