Durham Birding (22 Viewers)

Hetton Lyons Area

A few local shots, taken yesterday.

Pretty quiet, bird wise, but noticed that the swallows were mating and also collecting nesting material.

Is it normal for them to have more than one brood?, I know other birds do, or is it maybe a sign of more good weather to come !

Two juvenile Cuckoo at the end of Zinc Works Road this morning. Looks like they're roosting again in the migrant bushes south side of the sand extraction site but also feeding in amongst the dunes north side as well. Very flighty due to all the dog walkers.

One is reddish-brown and the other more slaty-grey.

Around 200 terns sat on the beach as the tide was coming in. Viewed from a distance but Common and Sandwich obviously present from the calls with lots of young birds. No sign of any Skua.

Lots of Linnet, Meadow Pipit, Skylark and several Stonechat - all with families. Sedge Warbler still singing along Zinc Works Road.

Grey Partridge x17 on the power station field - 3 adults and 14 chicks.
