URGENT CORRECTION

Apologies for an earlier error, kindly pointed out by Alan J.B.
Here's the correct version!
Or there's a Red Kite Safari this Saturday,13th February, starting at 10.30a.m. from the Black Horse Pub, Barlow village- just between Winlaton and High Spen, above Rowlands Gill. You'd have a great time and have a chance to see some of our kites as they are establishing their breeding territories.
If you're free, come along; you're very welcome!

.

Please make an effort to attend and help us record and protect the birds in your county.

Access to the Science Site is from the south side of Stockton Road at the top of the hill where the A177 enters Durham from Shincliffe and Houghall. Entering the Science Site at the eastern (Shincliffe) end, park on the left about 100 metres in and go into the building opposite by the main entrance. Room CG83 is one floor down. If the entrance barrier to the car park is down press the button and the security staff should grant you access.

Visit to WWT today

Called in at about 2.00pm. Walked down to the new hide at Hawthorn Wood which seems to be well made and sited. Was there for about an hour saw Blue,Great,LTand Coal tits, Pheasants,Chaffinch,Bullfinch,Treecreeper,GSW, Goldfinches,Jay,Magpie,Robin,Blackbird,Hedge Sparrow, pair of Siskins and a few grey squirrels and one rat !. I was at the hide for an hour and in that time a Sparrowhawk flashed through three times spooking the birds, things happened so quickly but I dont think it took anything.

Moved onto the Wader Lake where it was quiet apart from the Grey Herons which were really noisy and busy in rebuilding and tidying up their nests. Saw Mallard,Teal,2 Oystercatchers,a Snipe, many Shelduck,Moorhens and Greylags.

Does anyone know when the Avocets usually return ?

Quick question. Would a Ring-necked Duck mate with a Tufted Duck???

When down Cowpen Bewley to see the Ring-necked Duck today it did a bit of "Display" type behavior (throwing head back and lifting front end out of the water).

Also the Goldeneye was giving some excellent close views and nice to see Jaybee and Scuzz there.
Ray thanks for the go with the Sigmonster, you're a gentleman:t:.

Cowpen Bewley Yesterday.
RN Duck came fairly close, other birds included gadwall, 3 goosander, single male goldeneye, male sparrow hawk perched at the far side of the pond, the usual gulls, tufties, mallards etc and 2 water rails, one of which was chasing the other down the right hand side reeds. Oh! and the resident Robin.

JBee might have salvaged a shot of the rails!.

Good day and nice to see Glen, Mick, Derek and a few others :t:.

A couple of others from the day.

The tree sparrow was from the car park bushes, near the feeders.

They both are about the AGM on 18th Feb! On the DBC web site you click on the title to access the further details or 'Meetings' in the panel to the left. The text is almost word for word unless I'm missing somethnig.

At least no one can say they missed not knowing about it now 8-P

Had a couple of hours at Croxdale today with a nice variation of Birds as follows.
15 Blue Tit, 4 Great Tit, 20 Long Tailed Tits, 1 Willow Tit, 2 Coal Tits, 2 Song Thrush, 2 Goldfinch, 2 Wren, 20 Mallard,1 Goosander, 1 Siskin, 1 Common Redpoll, 5 GoldCrest, 2 Cormorant, 2 Mute Swan, 3 Heron, 2 Robin, 2 Buzzard, 1 Sparrowhawk, 3 Treecreeper, 6 Nuthatch, 9 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 3 Blackbirds. 4 Rook, 3 Common Crow, 2 Jackdaw.
One of the Buzzards was being well mithered by the Sparrowhawk and eventually got bored and flew off. I was convinced I was being stalked by a GSW as everywhere I went there was one around.
