Durham ,Butterflies, Moths and Dragonflies. (1 Viewer)

Ray never tried to photograph moths because my interest has never stretched this far(yet).. but how do you manage shots like this? are the moths pretty docile etc. coming out of the trap?

There's a recent thread on photographing moths here; Photographing moths with some useful info/tips etc.

(And Scuzz's pics aren't too shabby mind ... ) On the fridge score; I tend to leave them inside it for quite a while (and on the floor/near the back) so they all tend to become really quite chilled, but then I don't tend to tip them out either ...

Confirmation that this is Yellow-barred brindle would be nice.
I believe it's a good find for the area if it is.

Ypsolopha dentella (Honeysuckle Moth), Depressaria pulcherrimella, Agonopterix ocellana, Ypsolopha parenthesella, Trachycera advenella

Various locations over the last year and a bit Martin.
Ray and I tend to get around a few places.
Both the Yellow-barred brindle and the Shuttle-shaped dart appear to confirm a move northwards of moths as well as other species. (I may be mistaken but I believe both are "scarce" north of Yorkshire.
I've had a lot of Shuttle-shaped darts in the garden including ssp. insula

I have seen a lot of Shuttle-shaped Darts in the garden recently.There must be a few species moving northwards. Lime Hawkmoths and Red Underwings are in Durham now.I saw a Red Underwing a couple of years ago in Sunderland.

Please please please put as many pictures on as you like! Not only are they great pictures but they are also helping me i.d. some of the moths I've trapped recently. I only started trapping last week and am struggling to come to terms with all the species. Its both extremely fun and extremely frustrating in equal amounts!

A visit to a moorland site proved less than great last night with conditions less than ideal.
Not sure what scuzz pulled into his trap but mine was disappointing to say the least.
Highlights being:
Dark arches, Dark marbled carpet, Ingrailed Clay, Neglected rustic, Heath rustic

Hi JBee i had my moth trap out in the garden last night i didn't get many moths.Highlights were a Barred Red and a Svennson's Copper Underwing.I checked the underside of the hindwings just to make sure it wasn't a Copper Underwing.Both species are difficult to tell a part.Also saw a Wall Brown in the garden today.

A few from the last couple of days-
This year ive seen far more Small Copper butterflies since i started taking notice of Butterflies a few years back..at least 4 in the last couple of days around the Trow and Leas area.

i had the moth trap out last night before the rain started.
brimstone,riband wave,l y underwing,a tiny little thing, common carpet,and not sure of the other 2.
loads of escapees again.
ancylis achatana maybe?

Thanks to Tom for pointing out my error with Shuttle-shaped dart ssp. insula - it is simply Shuttle-shaped Dart Agrotis puta
It was a dead ringer for the photo on UK Moths though
