At B&H et al. the ED50 is sold with a 13-30x piece, which can be had for $80 at Camera Land (assuming that you even want the 13-30x, which I don't). Today my ED50 did indeed arrive from Japan and everything looks fine, so it seems my experiment succeeded. I'm happy to read that Japanese shops are selling the scopes through ebay for Japanese prices and that people have had good experiences with ShopWise for similar amounts. I prefer to shop at B&H, Adorama, Eagle Optics etc. but if the difference is this big, I take my business elsewhere. To illustrate: the Nikon EDG scope field 65-Angled sells for $1300 in Japan, while in the US it costs $2700; for the EDG 80-Angled scope this difference grows to $1900 versus $3300.
