A couple of weeks back I was walking around near woodland/disused farm/farming area with a bit of marshy ground. The sort of place where there are numerous redstarts, flycatchers, the odd garden warbler and there is a marshy area where the farmer has put nest boxes up. There are barn and little owls there.

Anyway, this particular day the farmer had closed the gate, shearing the sheep, and had a few dogs with him going mental; and so I couldn't get out the usual way. I was forced to walk farther across and round them. 'Still a path of sorts mind you.

As I was walking I caught a glimpse of say 7 eggs on the ground to my right. 'Couldn't say the number for certain as once I saw it my instinct was to get away from it as soon as possible. I'd say either white or cream, seemed more white to me (I'm colour-blind so may have gotten that wrong) with the minimal amount of speckle. They were small, certainly didn't appear to be that of a medium sized bird. They were just lying in marshy ground, no nest built.

Any idea?

Possibly a water rail

Cheers. I've just had a look at their eggs. 'Colour looks perfect. 'Average size 1.4 inch x 1 inch seems too big. I'd say more like just under 1 inch x half an inch. And, there was absolutely no sign of any sort of scrape with these eggs. They were just lying in marsh land unlike the water rail nests I can see where there is at least some sort of intertwined reeds/grass to hold the eggs.

'Could be wrong, but doesn't seem to fit.
