EOS 20d DISCONTINUED? (1 Viewer)

Well that title certainly got my attention!

First I've heard of a replacement. I guess I'll be waiting a bit longer before I venture into buying a DSLR!

Canon 20D

Hi ANTHOPS,
After a vast amount of research (well an hour or so on the internet!) I found that Canon seemed to bring in a new digi SLR about every 18 months. I reckon a new one is due sometime next year, but it could be brought in late this year I guess. I'm sure that Canon keep a close eye on the market and want to try and keep ahead of the game!
To be of much interest an upgraded 20D would need to be at least 11 or 12mp me thinks.
Certainly I find my 20D is a pretty good machine but a bit more ooomph in the picture quality department would be nice!

Cheers,

madmike

I heard a rumour about a new camera 11mp resolution roughly 2wks ago the source said the UK street price would be about £1400.00(this wasn`t on the net)

Cheers Steve.

I think it will still be available for a while. The Nikon 4500 was discontinued over a year ago, perhaps more, but these cams can still be obtained. As soon as a model is put onto the market, another more updated version is in the pipeline, how can one keep up.

EOS 20D reappears - but does buying its replacement means buying new lenses?

BTW, just checked the Canon USA website, the 20D is still mentioned on the site. So click here: http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=10464[/QUOTE]

That's interesting because, for a while, Canon USA were only advertising the EOS 20Da. Perhaps they're worried that now that the "rumour" of a new camera is spreading, dealers will be stuck with unsold stocks of 20Ds.

Also have a look at the site below. I'm not an expert on Canon, so I do not know what an EFs lenses is, but IF what this guy has been told IS TRUE, then you will eventually have to replace these lenses if you wish to take pictures with future prosumer dslrs at full sensor resolution. For some people, it may be cheaper to buy an EOS1d II body and keep their collection of (excellent) "old" lenses!

I doubt if the 20D will be replaced anytime soon. Even if it is, it will take months before its replacement hits the market in sufficient numbers to make it readily available. Most of the rumours about new cameras at the moment seem to be of a forthcoming "3" series, which will allegedly share some features of both the 1 series and the 1.6 crop bodies. Again though the same thing applies, it will probably be the best part of a year between the announcement and it appearing in decent numbers. This "tweener" camera must be one of the most eagerly awaited cameras ever, so if you want one phone up your supplier now and ask them to start a waiting list with your name on top!

You can still buy unused 10D's if you look hard enough, apparently, so the chances of the 20D not being available in the near future are extremely low.

I think there is a very strong likelyhood of a 20D replacement being iminent, 20D came out last August and was unvieled in the UK at the birdfair, the 10D came out roughly a year before that, and the D60 was a year prior to the 10D.

If the 20D has now been taken off production (there will still be 'new' ones around for some time to come) it will make the way for production of a replacement.

My guess is that it will be around the 10-11 Mp range and still have an APS size sensor, hopefully it will have better buffer capacity and improved auto focus accuracy.

It would be great if it could autofocus on the central sensor at F8 as well.

Canon have still to introduce their eye-control autofocus to digital body - not sure how useful it would be but it would certainly give them a USP.

Something to make the camera less of a dust-magnet would be really useful, though!

Wow, Canon is already doing away with the 20D!? That would be like Nikon ditching the D70!

IMO Canon's next DSLR should be an Elan 7D, a little less than the 1D but a lot more than the digi rebel.

I was thinking of changing my 300d for a 20d, might just wait a bit and see what develops.
Can anyone afford to keep up with all these changes.
Going to the birdfair again this year, can ask the men from Canon

Did the worlds leading camera manufacturer really unveil a prestigious new camera at a birdfair in a muddy field in Rutland?

The rumour of the 20D being discontinued started on US sites when Canon temporarily removed it from the US web site, presumably due to updating items. A new camera - the 20Da was listed - semingly in its place. Some people saw the 20Da as a replacement, but in fact it is no more than a 20D without an AA filter in front of the sensor which makes it suitable for astronomy. Unless I am mistaken the AA filter was blocking out the H-alpha line (that's a specific red wavelength that is emitted by hydrogen clouds in interstellar space).

Presumably when the 20D is upgraded the next step will be a 10 or 12 MP sensor.

Leif.
