Words for Birds: A Lexicon of North American Birds with Bibliographical Notes by Edward S. Gruson published in 1972 by Quadrangle Books is also an interesting source of information on the meaning of both common and scientific names.

An interesting source of information for both common and scientific names that is rarely cited is Words for Birds: A Lexicon of North American Birds with Bibliographical Notes by Edward S. Gruson published in 1972 by Quadrangle Books in New York.
