Well, this is interesting. The golf course on the southern end of Hunstanton borders a large caravan park. Could this be the reason for the reluctance to admit birders to the site?

It'll be on the feeders at Titchwell next. And still no one will see it....

The nearest golf course to the seafront gardens and lighthouse (if it were in that area) is Old Hunstanton Golf course which is adjacent to the cliff top/lighthouse and the golf course continues on to Holme. There are no caravans adjacent to this golf course.

Fair enough, I missed the one at the north end. At least that one is much easier to cover :t:

Being Mr Smith has a soft spot for you Penny, you should ask him what golf course he is on about? ;)

Just tweeted him and asked him exactly that? and also whereabouts on the course?

Don't expect I will get an answer tonight though and being as I am out tomorrow won't find out unless someone puts the answer on here as unable to view twitter on my phone for some reason.

Golf Course

You've got the Pitch and Putt Course on the cliff top by the lighthouse, and then the proper links golf course north east of Old Hunstanton going up to Holme - site of course of the renowned Rock Thrush.

As someone sticks to patch in Norfolk and who doesn't really care whether this is a hoax or not, full marks to Tillsmith, pretty clever and has lead a fair few up the err, garden path

Really? You approve?? You like the idea of people wasting time and money do you?

Luckily it's not come to that, as clever is the one thing Tillsmith hasn't been...

Edit - oh dear, appears Mr Skua has deleted his post just now....

Ok I asked Don Draper in a PM to politely to delete this post as it was a rash response which I didn't think carefully about, didn't mean it, shouldn't have got involved and probably won't post on the minefield that is the rarebird thread again. I think the frustration that a few birders feel about this whole EBT thing is that is this the state that twitching has got to, people saying that they will go round Hunstanton looking for a bird that clearly doesn't exist! People seem now to be believing a hoaxer who they admit they don't believe in. Just seems a million miles away from getting out in the wilderness with a few friends, relaxing and seeing what you see. As I say got burnt here but if anyone wants to join in on an interesting discussion regarding a very pale Rough-legged Buzzard at Wells please have look at the Norfolk Thread and I admit that is not my patch, but an extension thereof.
Please keep on enjoying whatever approach your birding takes but this EBT thing is just crazy ''thumbs up''

I am not sure anyone can say categorically the bird does not exist (unless they know something extra). Sure the photo leads to a few questions, the method of news dissmenination is strange, no one seems to know who Till Smith is, no one has seen it in Hunstanton (but how seriously has it been looked for) etc so there is a very high probability that is a hoax but there is still an outside chance that there is an E-bT in Hunstanton, and if tied down and viewable that would be a hell of a twitch.

It's too bad that hoaxes like this have become so commonplace.

Not every genuine bird will have forensic levels of evidence, but mean stunts like this destroy the trust element that used to fill in the cracks.

Absolutely nothing new. I thorougly recommend the chapter in Beguiled by Birds by DIM Wallace entitled Ornithological Shysters - pages 106 to 115. Some interesting comments about more recent history.

Golf course

See www.hunstantongolfclub.com/ for details of the course. I imagine that at weekends, assuming decent weather, the golf course would be very busy, especially if there was a competition on, so there would be considerable disturbance. I presume the course can be viewed from the footpath on the south east side, or from the dunes to the north west.

On the brightness and clarity of the underparts (too bright imo for a female especially with apparent covert tips indicating first year >), general head markings which are lacking grey tones, some brownish speckling on upper breast, an immature male, but rather advanced.

I have to say that I consider this response to my enquiry on the apparent wing markings is probably an end to the record (in conjunction with the rather odd method of news dissemination and continuing soap story of the perpetrator). But the only thing that is certain is that I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again!

All the best
