Cheshirebirder has made an excellent suggestion.
A rare bird thread such as this one can be very long, without any actual substance. This is a waste of time for everybody.
A confirmed/unconfirmed tag would help people focus their attention on real birds.

Of course, if hoaxing is as well developed a British art form as LGRE indicates, it might simply spur more thoughtful windups than this one.

For the record I really do have to chase birds. Due to my obsessive compulsive nature it would be psychologically and emotionally harmful not to. At least that's what I tell my wife.

Hmm what a fantastic idea ,ive been looking for a good excuse. Nice one :t:
Might even get promoted to a championship side now

I'm considering utilising resources from abroad. It may cost a fortune and and won't quite feel right, but results are likely to improve.

Why can't a Junk Mail section be formed? If a thread gets rumbled, surely it could be simple for a mod to move it into a Junk folder. Or move it to an an unconfirmed thread folder.

When people are loosing their jobs all around us, rising motorists costs and the prospect of motorists paying an 02 tax in the near future. I don't think we need these sort of people making us chase up and down England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland (don't remember hearing about any Irish hoaxes, thank the lord) for birds photgraphed in Countries that are simply thousands of miles away from us.

I love Birdforum and its a very valuable communication tool for the modern premiership birder. The Veery thread has enabled 104+ people connect over a five day period with a Charter boat. It's certainly made me think, if I'm tackling the Western Isles etc the best way.

Hi Garry, surely "PREM"(lol) players, have pagers and don't depend on the free BF or Birdguides news,so the decision to chase is not based on BF threads surely, and wether to go or not is entirely up to yourself.

Bernie b, as I said before Birdforum/Internet is a fantastic resource. One day we might not have the luxury of pagers and we will have to rely on Birdforum/Internet for information as first hand. A few refinements to Birdforum wouldn't hurt anyone.

Some people like Bird windups...I don't. Of course they can be amusing but on the whole they are preventing us from trusting one another and the information we have at our disposal.

I spent the first evening doing a full scale investigation into the Eyebrowed Thrush, I quizzed reliable local people and with more & more information coming in, it was clearly a hoax.

Before I left work that day, I warned senior people that I might not be in the next day.

Why should I waste senior people time?

I've got to go now, as I've got to take my daugher to her swimming lesson.

Gary with all this talk of premiership twitching i would be interested in the total of your bou List? So take off your irish stuff. Then remove all the uk 400 stuff. Then take off birds you have not seen that well! This would include great snipe, long toed stint and waterthrush to name three. Bou total around 475? A little way to go to premiership status!

As a mere Conference (north) birder, I hope you'll excuse my temerity for answering your post.
I really don't think you should accuse hoaxers (or anyone else) of making you "chase up and down".

Peter

People check out unconfirmed/hoaxes/probables/definites on a regular basis. So people into birding/twitching will feel they need to go and have a look...just in case.

The only people it doesn't effect financially are the people preferring to stay put in front of their computer.

Full scale investigation Gary!!! Could you please explain what this entails other than ringing up lego?

Mark, not prepared to go down the route of taking birds off lists, this is totally off topic.

The investigation I did, was mainly ringing people up and then making my own mind if it is worth going to Norfolk.

Glad the picture come to light the first evening, as many might have travelled without it.

Christ alive, and folk wonder why some people get their kicks posting hoaxes about rare birds. Apart from the fact it's like shooting fish in a barrel, some people are simply *begging* to be wound up... As my dear old granny used to say, when you've got a fool, kick his arse.

On a not unrelated topic, I saw a photo online of a Cedar Waxwing today purporting to be taken on the east coast of the UK... (this is true - the record certainly isn't though, IMHO...)

Gary. Everybody has birds on there list that they would like to see better. Wilsons petrel was one on mine until i saw one to 15 feet off scilly. The bou question is a serious one as when comparing lists it is helpful to compare like with like.

Bless you, Phil. I knew someone would bite!

It's really tempting to leave this hanging, to see if the credulous or the mentally lame would get hot and bothered about it. Instead I'll just post the link.

Keep your eyes peeled, folks. Though rare, they're coming to a garden near you if you're on the east coast. ;)
