Gary. Everybody has birds on there list that they would like to see better. Wilsons petrel was one on mine until i saw one to 15 feet off scilly. The bou question is a serious one as when comparing lists it is helpful to compare like with like.

Sorry to go off topic.

I worked out my BOU list the other day and I think its about 482, but it would have been up to 5 birds higher if I didn't do Ireland.

I would have gone for Scarlet Tanager, Common Yellowthroat, Hermit Thrush, American Herring Gull, Chimney Swift etc.

But I don't think you can compare BOU/IRBC listers with BOU listers. If I would go to Fair Isle for a good British and Irish tick but not for a Common Yellowthroat then the BOU list is meaningless and not worth worrying about.

However once I broke 500 UK400club and I am now keen to get 500 BOU/IRBC, so maybe one day I will try to get 500 BOU and the five birds listed above may hurt. But I really doubt it.

Going off topic on a thread that has been going nowhere for over a week is not a crime yet!! Do go and see any birds you have seen poorly Gary, although wilsons petrel was not exactly cheap.

Bird, bird, bird...
Bless you, Phil. I knew someone would bite!

It's really tempting to leave this hanging, to see if the credulous or the mentally lame would get hot and bothered about it. Instead I'll just post the link.

Keep your eyes peeled, folks. Though rare, they're coming to a garden near you if you're on the east coast. ;)

Haha good one!

Why can't a Junk Mail section be formed? If a thread gets rumbled, surely it could be simple for a mod to move it into a Junk folder. Or move it to an an unconfirmed thread folder.

When people are loosing their jobs all around us, rising motorists costs and the prospect of motorists paying an 02 tax in the near future. I don't think we need these sort of people making us chase up and down England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland (don't remember hearing about any Irish hoaxes, thank the lord) for birds photgraphed in Countries that are simply thousands of miles away from us.

I love Birdforum and its a very valuable communication tool for the modern premiership birder. The Veery thread has enabled 104+ people connect over a five day period with a Charter boat. It's certainly made me think, if I'm tackling the Western Isles etc the best way.

An O2 tax? Right, I'm switching to Vodafone. B :)

Ah Gary, this genius. I've worked out my own British list, and if you include all the birds I just couldn't be arsed to go for, I'd defo be on 531.

Likewise, I'm really excited about my 2011 year list of 374 that I could have got, but basically just haven't.

Don,

I see your point.

But I'm dead serious about the 5 birds I mentioned. I would have attempted all 5 of them for sure if I hadn't seen them in Ireland.

The Birds I could have seen from '77 to '99 aren't mentioned because I wasn't really fussed about bird lists those days.

But if we turn the clocks about to '77 and give me the same level of keeness as I've currently got, I reckon I would have been Top 20. Sadly I will never know. But now I'm probably too old to even get into the Top 100.

RE Birder

Birding not twitching
'premiership birder' is the best thing to come out of this thread, class. Up there with the 'George Michael' comment IMO

Genius indeed.

Would 374 get you into the imaginary premiership?

I don't know whether I started the term "premiership birder". Hope I did. But people with a list of 500 (regardless of taxonomy) have really pushed the boat out and to me that's what I would like to call them.

So I suppose you could say Championship is 400-499, League one is 300-399, League two is 200-299, Conference is 100-199 and Conference North/South is 1-99.

Its all a bit of fun....maybe when everybody has got 500, a re-classification is needed.

I didn't hear about that.

Between 1956 and 1958 there were claims of 4 flocks of Lesser Short-toed Larks totalling 42 birds across three counties (Wexford, Kerry and Mayo). Remarkably the first three sightings all involved the same individual. Not sure if it was concluded that these were a willfull hoax or just dodgy / hopeful ID skills.

Interesting stuff and very surprising. I've met lots of the Irish twitchers/birders since '03 and I find them amazingly friendly. I consider any twitch to Ireland a real priviledge and look foward to the whole adventure immensely.

If some British Bird Finders change holiday plans from Scilly/Shetland to Ireland in the near future...find some American goodies and bingo, we might get the British & Irish American Warbler list closer to 30 species mark.
