Hi All We’ve been here a couple of months now and Fair Isle is every bit as wonderful as we knew it was going to be. The birds have been pretty good (Bluethroat, Great Grey Shrike, two Hawfinches and a Subalpine Warbler are amongst the highlights so far), with plenty more to come I’m sure and the seabirds are in now and starting to settle. One problem that we do have is that we still require a Cook for the new season (which starts next week…). We’ve got an excellent Assistant cook in place and Susannah and Becki are helping out (so don’t worry, you’ll still get really good food when you visit!), but we need a Cook from as soon as possible until the end of October. If you are an experienced cook who fancies living somewhere spectacular in a friendly community then this could be the opportunity for you. Responsibilities include cooking meals on a set-menu, set-time basis for up to 40 people, managing the kitchen staff, ordering stock and planning menus. A reasonable level of physical fitness is required as is the ability to be friendly, work in a team and be flexible (the weather can have a big influence on supplies and visitors arriving). There is a moderate salary and board and lodgings are provided as are some travel expenses to and from the island. It’s worth bearing in mind that, although there will be chances to see many of the rare birds that turn up on the island, it will not be possible for the cook to go out birding whenever they want. If you’d like more information about the post, please drop us a line at susannahparnaby 'AT' yahoo.co.uk or call the Obs on 01595 760258. You can find out more details about the Obs at www.fairislebirdobs.co.uk and follow our blog at http://fibowarden.blogspot.com . Best wishes and please do drop us a line if you’ve any questions about FIBO, David and Susannah
