It was snowing when I looked out of the window earlier.|:(| Then it stopped & we had sunshine for a while, it's now just cloudy & grey.
I want Spring!

It was looking like a nice day when I got up, grey but looking like the sun would break through, and had my shower this morning. Half an hour later, as I was making my breakfast in the kitchen I looked out the window and saw this *see below!*:eek!: So much for heading up to Budle Bay and Stag Rocks to have a look for sea ducks, divers & grebes.....I'll see nowt offshore in this blizzard!!! :smoke:

Just heard about a possible flock of waxwings just down the road so going to nip out soon to go look for them as they seem to be a tad scarce this winter :smoke:

Well I had a couple of rather heavy blizzards as I drove down to Ashington but after a 30 minutes hunt I found the waxwings - a superb flock of 35 :t:
This afternoon turned out quite sunny tho' still remaining chilly at around 2 degrees C. Supposed to get down to -5 tonight :eek!: Sent Neil off to work with extra layers :-O

4.20pm I decided to have a walk along to the entrance of Hulne Park where the hawfinch have been seen over the past couple of days. Got all wrapped up and set off.....barely got 100yds up the road when it started to snow. I decided it would soon blow over but the flakes just got bigger and bigger :eek!: I must admit they WERE very picturesque as they floated down but it soon became clear to me that it was NOT going to blow over so I headed back home :smoke: It snowed steadily for over an hour and decided to stop just as it was getting too dark to go out! Typical! :-O Never mind...I'll head out tomorrow morning :t:

Lucky you with the Waxwings, Gill. They are definitely the one I would really like to see. Trouble is, I live a bit too far south and west for the average year!

The snow continued on and off all night according to Neil who was on nightshift but thankfully we only have an inch or two in Alnwick this morning.....very pretty as you can see...and not too cold at 5.7 degrees C :t:

I think I'll attempt the walk along to Hulne Park to look for the hawfinch and then ontinue on down to the Canongate Bridge soon :king:

I awoke to see snow lightly falling. Very soon the flakes became much bigger and before long there was a covering of 3 inches. About three-quarters-of-an-hour ago it stopped, and the sun showed its lovely face, causing a reasonable thaw. Hope it all goes before the temperature drops this evening.

Snow for a while yesterday, soon melted once the sun came out.
Today has been strange, here it was mild & damp on roads/paths, at Exeter & N/Abbot, freezing in places & much colder than here.

Loads of rain overnight and first thing, then a lovely sunny day with fluffy white clouds and sunshine. 6°c.

Cloudy but bright outside, light wind and 6.8C on the thermometer.

When Neil has finished playing about with a hifi rack we are going out for a few hours :t: Take advantage of no snow....though it IS forecast heavy by 3am Wednesday morning :eek!:

Dull grey, not that cold apart from the breeze. The heavy rains yesterday have left their mark as my patch is flooded out! Will post some photos in a bit when I get them onto my computer. I wanted to walk along the river into town but the tunnel under the main road was flooded and then when I walked into town and around the back of the mill to get to the meadow near Springfield lock that meadow and the path all along the river up to the town sluice was flooded too. There's usually quite a disparity between the water level on the upstream and downstream sides of the sluice but a great mass of water was flowing over it and the levels were differing by less than a foot. Not sure what the main part of the Baddow Meads is like as I couldn't reach it but I'm guessing it's pretty well covered by water judging by the upstream edge - it's very flat and low-lying land.

edit: the first photo is from the side road at Moulsham Mill looking across to the Chelmer Valley bridge in the distance that crosses the river. It usually runs off to the left where the far trees can be seen at the top left of the shot, the area covered with water is a meadow that's usually covered with Redwings! The second photo is taken just a hundred yards or so further upstream looking down from next to the sluice at the town centre towards the meadows of the first photo.

Goodness, Paul, that really has flooded badly. Is it snow melt, rain or a combination of the two?

Here today is thoroughly miserable with rain, sleet and now drizzle. Stiff E wind is making it feel raw cold.

It's from rain - we had torrential downpours yesterday although I missed most of it as I was in bed with a migraine (since I couldn't have done much yesterday anyway at least I got it over and done with. :-O). I've seen it a lot worse than that though - certainly this time last year when the heavy snow melted we had very bad flooding along the river. Not sure how the Chelmer Valley reserve in town is, I think at the moment due to the sluice the water levels upstream are ok so that is probably not flooded, unlike last year!

Now wet again, sleet by the look of it. Forecast is pretty much the same for the rest of the week I think - glad I got out into town this morning.

That is awful flooding, Paul. There is some localised flooding here, but not to that extent.

Cold here, rained all day. 2.5°c.

It's an area that always has flooded very easily, the meadow is VERY flat and low-lying. It's a flood relief area for the town, which used to flood badly until flood prevention work in the '60s and the main part of the flood meadow stays fairly swampy over the winter, particularly the area I walk across to get to the river where there is a lot of standing water.

Back last February when the heavy snows melted some places through the town flooded:

after that flood subsided:

and where I took the second photograph with the benches looked like this!

this was the baddow meads, my patch, during those floods:

the river is... err, in the gap between the fence and style in the foreground and the fence behind.
