A new thread

Yesterday (30/01/13), A flock of 32 WAWINGS flew SW over middle pool, viewable from the c'way between Grove and middle pool. They briefly alighted on houses on Fens Pool avenue, before flying off SW into the estate.
A Peregrine flew in and landed upon a mast with a Feral Pigeon before flying onto the grass bank below, to briefly pluck it before being flushed. Good Numbers of Tufted Duck were scatted over the 3 Pools, and quite a few Gulls were scattered around, mostly being BHG.
There was no sign of the Glaucous Gull up to 4pm when we left.

Good to see a new thread on Fens Pool let’s hope it takes off! Only being a stones throw from me at Bumble Hole it’s good to ear what’s happening in the local area.

Their was up to 160+ Tufteds back in Oct - Nov last year but they failed to attract anything rarer than up to 3 different Goldeneyes and a female scaup like hybred. The last rare diving ducks recorded on site were Scaup (About 4 records of birds in mid to late 1990s and a Male Ferruginous Duck back in 1991, cheers simon

Wow, really? I never though Fens had that sort of number of Tufties. IS that a regular occurence, or just a one off?
A drake Fudge would get me running!

That is quite a notable record, it will be interesting to see whether it is picked up anywhere else or if a ringtail has been noted anywhere adjacent prior to your sighting, here's hoping.....

Its only the second ive recorded on my local patch which covers Fens Pools, Barrow Hill, Russells Hall Estate, Milking Bank areas. The first was also a flyover heading south west on february 21st Apr 2011. On the other hand Marsh Harrier is recorded about every 2 to 3 years, As for the hen harrier being seen elsewhere, once it reaches the open country of Highgate / Kinver area in south staffs it could easily slip through un noticed.

The hen harrier was almost certainly seen by another local birdwatcher, who reported a harrier like raptor fly low SW over Buckpool Valley just after my sighting, unfortunately he was without optics at the time. thanks simon

First vist of the year for me here after a bit of a trip on the buses from Withymoor Pool first I had to get the 287 from Sainsbury’s to merry hill then the 222 to fens pool arrived around 12.25pm with the wind now at a very cold – 9 with wind chill so had a quick walk around here not stopping to long.

There were a few other birders around but nothing species wise to shout about water was beginning to freeze in a few places where it was quite shallow.
When the blizzard hit around 1pm gulls seem to drop from the skies
