Why is this a Pied Flycatcher? It is a first winter bird, with very marked lesser coverts, rather evenly broad white edge on the terials, the white on the outermost tailfeathers reaches the tip and in general has an almost red-throated flycatcher like tail! Though caution is needed when ID'ing B/W flycatchers in the autumn, especially out of range, why is this a pied flycatcher and why not either a hybrid or a semi-collared flycatcher?

We are all agreed the bird is a 1st-w, patten of white in T1/T2 and GC's confirms that. The white tips to the MC's (not LC's Simon) are retained juvenile feathers. Pied generally moults several but this is variable and they can (rarely?) retain all, as this bird has.

The tail pattern excludes 1st-w Semicollared because white is far too extensive, extends to a/l t4. In autumn F/1st-w Semicollared outer rectrices are typically rather pale grey-brown, the white confined to the margins of t6 & t5 and lacking 'windows' often with s dark subterminal bar to t6.

Agree with Jean its a 1st-w Pied.

Very interesting discussion. We had a similar conundrum in Romania with a bird that briefly entertained thoughts of an out of range Semi-collared, see thread here.

The white tips to the MC's (not LC's Simon)

Thanks Graham, I had always thought of the tips as being on the MCs - got thrown by our friend FaroeRagnar mentioning the LCs. MY gut instinct made me think its a Pied except that this bird seems to have an exceptional amount of white (on the tips of the MCs!)
