That is shockingly difficult, i can barely see a thing. I would say lesser spotted woodpecker, but i think i've gone funny-eyed from looking to hard.

Hi, Chris! It is just like in the field. You hear the bird , but you are not able to locate it. When you find the bird , then you have to id it.
Try again!

Strewth that's tricky. My best bet is the silhouette of something that looks like a treecreeper creeping up the tree in the middle towards the bottom?

That's cruel. If it's a Treecreeper then it's almost off the photo. Can't see anything else.

It was also for me very difficult to see where the bird was.
There is something in the center of the photo!

ahh ha!
I have located it now and it's a Woodpecker. Now I Can't decide if it's greater spotted or middle spotted......Middle?

PS You've missed the treecreeper in the bottom of the shot. ;)

in that case it should be a giant treecreeper considering that the woodie has 2 white spots on its back, thus excluding lesser. ;)

to be different, i say syriacus.

If you discovered a treecreeper, then I have to tick a new sighting for my list!!!!

uhm, ody, does that mean it is not a (spotted) woodpecker? i really can't see jurij's robinish bird in the middle of the pic... we're through the black and white ones - except maybe white backed ;)

scooby spotted that treecreeper-ghost, not me and it was him also who had dendrocopos major (in this case a male) as a consideration although (in post 272) he swayed towards the direct question - is it middle spotted?

male d. major it is then!

Great Spotted (maybe making it up as I go along - but see back view with head on profile looking away from trunk, and extensive white wing panel down outside right on screen)

Edit: sorry Lou, didn't see your post, you got there before me!
