i was out practising with my new camera when i came across a flock of about 15 finches feeding under the trees. One individual hung about looking at me for a while - though it was still a good distance away

I've seen a couple of things they look a bit like in the bird books but I'd be grateful if someone could give me an id

thanks so much

alison

Thanks so much for the speedy replies AMC, colonelboris and rockfowl

I had it in my head that chaffinches were pretty bright red but on investigation that seems to be some of the lurid illustrations of the males.

Does that mean that these were all female or do the colours fade in the winter?

thanks
alison
