As I mentioned in the Sigma forum the D3 plus the old Sigma 170 -500 zoom was surprisingly better than the lens on the D2x.  You'll find the same with the D300. The new 500/4 will be another level of quality over the zoom (primes always are ,although the gap is getting narrower ) but at a very high premium.At the Alligator Farm here in Florida (nesting egrets/herons/ibis/spoonbills/woodstorks ) I would have been better off with the 80 - 400 or the 70 - 200/2.8 plus 1.4x , rather than the fixed 300/4 AFS.Everything was close (3 - 25 metres ).Neil.</blockquote>
