Phil, The Terra ED (8x42 or 8x32) is hardly a mediocre binocular at that price. All of them in that price range have their quirks. Leupold doesn't list the Hawthornes on its 2015 website or I would have recommended it. It was an upgrade of the BX-2 to FMC with a corresponding jump in price. My Leupold 7x42 BX-2 is not FMC but MC only and does not have ED glass but it is a good binocular however Leupold discontinued the 7x42 version. The TerraED has ED glass but is not FMC. The BX-3 Mojaves are new and they cost $100.00 more than the TerraED does if you buy directly from Leupold. The 8x42 is on sale now at Cabelas for $379.00. Its FOV is slightly smaller than the Terras. It is FMC but no mention is made of ED. In this price range you pay your money and you take your choice, meaning chances. I try to buy where there is no hassle if you have to return it either through the dealer or the manufacturer. Mechanics and quality control are of prime importance in this price range. Personally because of this I would look into Vortex Diamondbacks before I would consider an Endeavor or an Olympus. Bob
