First three birds you expect to see in 2016 (1 Viewer)

Tawny Owl, Robin, Blackbird, though those may well all be heard records. I shall be out at least two hours before it gets light.

Robin and Blackbird still good bets for the first seen birds with Carrion Crow also likely.

For some reason I can't edit this post?

Anyway, two birds up (heard) for 2016: Moorhen and Woodpigeon - the latter crashing out of roost wing-clapping but utterly distinctive. Neither on my guess list. Going to bed now as up again 0430.....

Happy New Year!

John

I've actually got the day off this year instead of working so will be out at first light. First three I reckon will be...

1: Jackdaw
2: Herring Gull
3: Blue Tit

All from living room window.

Completely wrong...as usual the birds are hopping around outside at dusk on December 31st yet come first light on January 1st the little tinkers hide!!! :-O Today's first three were....

1: Rook ~ 3 flying past church
2: Blackbird ~ male on neighbour's feeders
3: House Sparrow ~ 2 females on feeders

Off out now for a few hours - beautiful sunny day here with not a cloud in the sky :t: Going to aim for 50 by end of day.

Mine would be

Blue Tit
Coal Ti....
... but the third is a bit more tricky to pick. It might depend what time I wake up, but the main contenders would be Starling, Blackbird, Crow, Wood Pigeon.

Almost, but not quite

1: House Sparrow
2: Coal Tit
3: Blue tit

My first bird of 2016 was a Woodpigeon then lots of birds showed up Great Spotted Woodpecker, Blackbird, Blue Tits & House Sparrows. Was hard to see the firstv3 they all came at once.

Still dark out here at 6:40 AM, went outside and did not hear anything and too dark to see anything, so do not have any birds yet! (19 F, brrr....)

OK ...
1. Northern Cardinal
2. House Finch
3. Dark-eyed Junco

followed shortly by two fly-over American Crows

Seagull, seagull and seagull.

Or perhaps Herring Gull, Blackbird and Carrion Crow if it's still dark.

Well, it was 8:20 or so before I was out and about;

Pied Wagtail overhead unfortunately
Herring Gull
Blackbird

then

Blackcap
Robin
Wren

in miserable conditions. Back into hibernation for another year ...

Feral Pigeon, Magpie and Carrion Crow. Though Herring Gull and Woodpigeon in with a good chance. What I'd really like as a massive flat/year tick would be House Sparrow or Greenfinch. They used to be outside my south London window here daily, but neither have been seen for the last 15 years. Buzzard, Red Kite, Grey Wag yes, but no House Sparrow, no Greenfinch...
The first three turned out to be Woodpigeon, Feral Pigeon and Starling. Other spp today (chronological order): Herring Gull, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Long-tailed Tit, Dunnock, Great Tit, Blackbird, Lesser Black-backed Gull (an immaculate adult), Blue Tit, Robin, Common Gull. Not a bad start as I'm largely housebound - total for 2015 was, oh dear... 44. I intend to do better in 2016!

Best guesses for me are:-
Heard - Robin, Blackbird & Mallard
Seen - Blackbird, Mallard & Carrion Crow

In reality, heard was Robin, Herring Gull & Blackbird. While seen was Moorhen, Robin & Mute Swan.

Carrion Crow was 7th species recorded and Mallard was 18th species recorded.

All the best

Prediction:
Hooded Crow
Feral Pigeon
Great Tit

Actual order:
1)Feral Pigeon (male singing and dancing for female on my window sill while I still had blinds on)
2)Hooded Crow
3)Two mixed flocks of Rooks and Jackdaws flying over
Only between the two flocks did I hear the Great Tit calling from the woods.

Well, I said it would be Dark-eyed Junco, Dark-eyed Junco, and House Finch. It ended up being junco, House Finch, junco, so I was very close!

As far as first three species, it was Dark-eyed Junco, House Finch, and I think American Robin.

I'll guess:

Spanish Sparrow
Sardinian Warbler
Chiffchaff

Only saw one species today. That's what happens when you wake up at midday and spend the remaining daylight hours eating 8-P. Obviously it was Spanish sparrow so technically I'm 100% correct so far :king:.
