Super baby bird photo's Pam & Wendy.
We have had a pair of adult Goldies too, Wendy, but I think they must be non breeding, the other 3 pairs no sign of, for a while now. I hope the same, if they are breeding, they bring their babies here.

I've been pretty busy of late, but yesterday I managed a couple of hours at Upton Warren and today I thought I'd take an early morning stroll over our fields (do the fields count as a sort of extended garden - I do hope so).
50 years I known these fields and we've owned them for 30-odd years.
This is a first - I became immediately aware that my presence was unwelcome as I encountered two screaming adult birds, so suspecting (but not daring to believe) that they were guarding a nest site, I backed off some 100 yards and stood in this very shady patchy of birch trees atop the hill. Eventually one of the adult birds landed and out a a tussock of grass/weeds came this little beauty.
I really could not believe what I was seeing. Every bird magazine you see these days mentions the decline in numbers of Lapwings, but here they are on my fields! Two adults and two beautiful chicks. How they've raised them with eight horses roaming around the area I will never know.
Apologies for the below-par standard of this image but I was shaking like a leaf - and still am!

Awwwwwww! Look at all the youngsters! How heartwarming is that?!?!? :t:

I've only seen three Cardinal fledglings, two Starling fledglings (*very* chubby) and six House Sparrow kids. But we are still very early in the season here.

All your photos are lovely! Maybe I'll give it a go and try to take some here as well. :t:

I think a new wave of Sparrow fledglings may be in the offing, the ones I've been seeing in the garden have become independent but spotted a rather young fledgling being fed by an adult in the tree this afternoon - will keep an eye out for more... already have a huge number of young sparrows, I think my colony might be rebuilding the population all by itself! The blackbirds seem to be collecting food to take away again, I think they may possibly be working on a second brood now!

Also the Robin fledglings have been venturing out from the safety of the conifers a few times today, I managed to get some video footage of one this evening but earlier this afternoon got a couple of snaps of one hopping around the tree stump under the cotoneaster.

Nice thread, Pam. Super stories and pictures eveyone.

We have a lots of Juv Starlings in our back garden. It is like Hitchcock the birds. They wait for me to put food in the bird feeders, and the noise they make is something else. I have seen one parent bird feeding up to three Juv's at one time. They look well past they fledge stage, and they need to leave the home.

Funny how some birds leave the nest, and move on, ans others carry on feeding their youngsters which are capable of flying very easily, and probabily feeding themslves.

Regards
Kathy

I know what you mean Kathy, I've seen the Starling fledglings sitting in a tray full of food being fed from the tray by an adult. I guess that they just don't link food with what they're standing in at that age, it takes time for it to sink in.

Looked out this morning to find one of my Robin fledglings having a bath so quickly grabbed the video camera...

hi Fozzy

Yip, that is the Starlings to a tee. They love the water, and my bird bath is really dirty by the end of each day. What is it with birds and water. o:)

The Wood Pigeons sit their rears in the water to cool of. :eek!:

What a cute video of the baby Robin - what a little sweet thing. Must be the heat wave that is making him enjoy his bath so much.

The help for the flickr video 'thingy' suggests that you need to make sure you have the latest version of 'flash' Pam:

Thanks Pam and Kathy, really nice to see the fledglings doing well. I was stood in the garden earlier talking to my brother on the phone and one of the Robin fledglings hopped down to the water dish about 8 feet away from me and had a drink, perched on the near side and facing away from me! Brilliant!

The birds have all been taking advantage of the water today, having a good soak in all the baths I have here - I had to go and top up the water as they splashed out so much, and yes, the water does get pretty filthy! |:D|

No problem Pam, hope it fixes it for you.

Thanks a lot Val and Wendy, it really is great to see them bumbling around the garden and watching that one having a bath really made my day! They do seem to get picked on by the House Sparrows, who have a little peck at them if they're sitting in the same place, but nothing too heavy. I managed to get another photo of one of them yesterday evening, it was pretty dim under the bushes so some were a bit blurry but this one came out ok...

Not exactly awash with birds in my garden but I was delighted to have a Great Tit feeding a youngster first thing this morning.
