Bad News for the durability / quality of my ZEN ED82...Less than a year old and entering its first winter in my posession(and last, it seems)... I have commented in the optical quality of the scope ,that kept me a happy user in spite of having already had concerns about the build quality of some of its parts. A week after I received the scope the whole bayonet came loose, and I had to wait for a replacement part from the manufacturer. Customs are now very rigurous in Spain,(trying to scrape some Euros off the massive country´s decifit i guess),and since I wasnt to keen in spending 100 euros in shipping and risk to pay that much in fees getting the scope sent back to me ,I asked ZEN-RAY to send the part that I can clearly seen that was defective : A threaded ring that bridged the waterproof scope socket and the bayonet itself, both threaded. I could see that nothing was compromised in regards of the scope´s Waterproofness, since the watertight eyepiece window is sealed from the inside, and the bayonet sits in a closed socket. The part arrived about a month after, and it was simple and easy to fit the bayonet in place and tight the ring(I got the right tool) .Done. Fixed as new.HAppy about it I fitted the scope with a Swarovski 30X SW and believe that I dont need better optics for my use. I do use the scope for sketching and it has worked very well for Me. Star tests of the unit shows good correction even for Spherical aberration,so No complaints about the optics ,I can praise them indeed.Specially the brightness, resistance to flare(no flare)and control of CA(exceptional)..I do believe I have a better scope optically than the unit tested by Henry Link. BUT...Unfortunately..Its build quality ,again ,has failed. This time ,and very surprisingly ,the scope INTERNALLY FOGGED. No water or moisture involved,AT ALL..Never..I do live in an area with high humidity, though, with some condensation and dew falling each evening, and I assume the air is charged with molecules of water (I live 2 km from the sea,at the most). The scope supossed to be Nitrogen filled(or argon, not sure)So it doesnt suposse to have moisture inside..Heck ,My binos are non waterproof porros,15 years old,and they have never fogged, even though I store them in the same area. I brought the scope upstair a warm afternoon,to sketch the starlings. The scope was COLD,as I store it in my studio in a pretty cool room,so after few minutes in the Sun a circle of condensation appeared ,it seemed to be between the two first elements...It took about 10-15 min to disappear and didnt left any marks,or residue.See the pictures,,it is not a Catadioptric!!! is my FOGGING ZEN ED! I informed ZEN-Ray about this,a couple days ago,but not the best time of year to get response,in the midst of the Holidays. I understand. We`ll see... I had the scope for sale a while back,at least im happy I didnt sale it,and had to deal with a refund and shipping expenses ,etc--- FWIW I stored the scope overnight in a room at a much more mild temperature, and again brought it up to the Sun,and the scope fogged again!..this time a smaller circle of light condensation that dissipated in about 5 min. You think they forgot to charge with gas the space between the lenses?..did the gas leaked?...Any ZEN ED82 user has experienced this problem ? I know...I know...This Quality issues are not exclusive of Chinese manufactured optics, for I saw a thread about fungus growing in Swarovision binos ,recently. But this really makes me wish I had the money to buy a high end instrument,at this point.
