Foret du Day Djibouti for Francolin at New Year's (1 Viewer)

I'm in contact with a local who can organise a trip out of Djibouti city to see the francolin in the Foret du Day. I think there are some other birds worth seeing. But it's about £300/day for 3/4 days, so I thought I'd post here on the off chance that someone might like to join me and share the costs. Maybe it's possible to hire a vehicle and go independently, I don't know, but the road up there is bound to be bad.

Let me know if interested.

Not able to join you, but I do have some information you might find helpful.

I went in 2007, and if I recall correctly, the road to Foret du Day wasn’t too bad. Not sure of the condition now, but it should be manageable with a heavier vehicle. I wouldn’t risk the trip with a lightweight car.

We spent the night in the very primitive dome-shaped structures that the local Afar people use. No electricity or water but it was OK for one night. We had to take all of our food and supplies, which was all arranged by our local fixer.

We arrived in the afternoon and most of our group saw the francolins/spurfowl reasonably well on a distant rocky hillside almost right away. We did refind them the next morning, finally giving everyone a good look, but it took a little time and effort. So unless you’re lucky, 3/4 of a day may not be enough time.

Good luck.

Dave
