Thanks Daniel. I had a great trip. I did a self driving trip of 29 days. Saw a lot of birds. Would have seen more on an organized tour, but I'm a bit put off by the price gouging that is going on with tour groups.

Sounds great, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be interested in a trip report if you've the time and inclination at some point. I've not quite made it to peninsula Malaysia yet (save brief trip to KL), but will have to correct that soon...

Yep, organised tours are a rich mans game.

@49bentley Re guides and expenses: What I have found most helpful is looking at the top birders on e-bird for the country I am in and contacting one of the many locals that mention they are guides for that purpose. I have done this in Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Nepal, with a great experience each time. Not only do they identify those hard to identify birds (of which there are far too many in asia:)) but they also take you to places you would not find on your own. I suspect now the price for a day trip would be around 120 to 150 usd, so something one might not want to do for a long journey but I have found it most helpful for a day or two here and there when I am in a new country or area. I have also found local guides on the internet but that seems much more difficult in the last 5 years or so.
Just a thought:)
Hope you enjoy your trip
steve
