postcardcv cracks it..

i always found juv bullfinches look like north american birds, e.g. fem blue grosbeaks, but not like anything familiar here.

the nice balkan shore lark looks really different than the northern ssp, as we could confirm last may on bucegi-plateau in the carpathians, where they sang on rocks jutting out the deap snowcover.

I couldn't have got two of those I don't have the shore ark or the gyr in any of my books.
I'm surprised you don't have shore lark.... it's a scarce but regular visitor to the UK. Gyrfalcons are obviously rarer but still not totally unexpected.

christine,
in order to have more fun and challenge i chose a variety of "normal" european but also some vagrant birds, all of which usually are covered by modern guides and books - these often include north africa and the middle east, i.e. together with europe the western palearctic. look again into your books, maybe you have overlooked Shore Lark. And Gyr = Gyr Falcon.
cheers,

Thanks Lou, I only have the small Colins wild guide and macmillan field guide to bird identification. and nether are in these books. Looks like I will have to get some better books so I have a better chance of getting them right in the field.

a similar pattern.

5 extrapoints for naming 3 sp. correct on first trial, 10 extrapoints for naming all 5 on 1st trial. ( don't forget: it's just a game! :hi: )

have fun!

5 Great Bustard

I'm aware that you can't tell me if I got this one right or wrong, but that's all I can think of before going to school. I'll guess the 5 later.

EDIT: 2 Snow Bunting
