to my surprise my camera has been marked as "shipped 30 march" so may well be with me sooner. If only spring would be as fast. If it were not for the easy pay pay option from QVC, I would have to defer purchase. May get warmer middle of next week but for how long?...

I getting a lot of good information from this thread and I appreciate all of your input. Today, I ran across an entry from a DP review forum:
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/51114729
As I anticipate wanting to add a remote option to a new camera, I wondered if anyone else is familiar with this issue.
Thanks -

Steve

If you look at some of my early posts on this thread you'll find youtube links to the videos I have posted about the HS50 over the past 3x weeks.

I will post an update later today but in the meantime

Currently the only remote control that will work with the Fuji HS50 EXR camera is the RR-80A made by Fujifilm
The RR-80A is essentially an adaptor cable together with a Fuji RR-80 remote control which they are calling RR-80A.

Once you have bought the RR-80A you can use the separate adaptor that comes with it ,with any RR-80 compatable remote control product whether made by Fuji , JJC or other manufacturers.

I thought the following explanation should help explain the situation regarding connecting remote controls to the Fuji HS series cameras.
if there are errors please advise me so that I can amend the text. the last thing we want to do is make this connector situation any more confusing.

The Fuji HS10 has no hardware or software facility for remote control.

(Some HS10 owners have constructed a metal bracket which fixes to the HS10 hotshoe which allows the attachment of the old fashioned mechanical remote control cable release.

The HS20, HS25, HS30, HS33 cameras all have a 6x pin Mini (B) USB connector that accepts a Fuji RR-80 remote shutter release which has a 6xpin Mini B USB plug connector .
All of the three RR-80 remote releases will work with the HS50 provided you have the Fuji RR-80A cable adapter shown on the right.
Both of the JJC remote releases and any other RR-80 compatible releases will work with the HS50 provided you use the fuji cable adapter on the right

Note:- Any RR-80 compatible remote control will work with any RR-80 camera so you can use not only the Fujifilm RR-80 but any RR-80 compatible shutter release, manufactured by JJC and other Companies.

The RR-80 remote shutter release will not fit the Fuji HS50 camera which has a unique 8x pin Micro USB socket.

Currently you can only buy a Fujifilm RR-80A remote release which is a standard RR-80 remote release with a 6x pin Mini B USB to 8x pin Micro USB cable adapter added. The adaptor isn't currently available seperately from Fujifilm but will shortly copied by JJC and other manufacturers.

If , like me, you have existing RR-80 remote releases that are not compatible you could do what I did and order the RR-80A release from Fuji or on ebay and then sell the redundant RR-80 remote release and just retain the special Fuji adapter to use with your existing RR-80 remote releases on the HS50. :t:

Apologies for the detailed explanation but it better to over explain than other HS50 owners to buy the wrong remote release in error as I and others have done.

On the left is a multi function remote release made by JJC which includes a timer function and an intervalometer.
In the center is a wireless remote release also by JJC
On the right is the so called RR-80A release which is a standard RR-80 release supplied with the separate cable adapter that allows you to use any of the remote releases pictured with the HS50

Thanks for that detail in your answer, earleybird. I guess I had assumed that "remote" meant "wireless", similar to a remote control for a television, for instance. I'm beginning to see that is not the case.
I did watch the video in the link above a while back didn't see anything about the adapter cable. My fault for not reading the follow-up posts carefully.
If I was satisifed with only the wireless option from JVC, which does not require the adapter cable that comes with the RR-80A, the whole adapter cable snafu could be avoided, correct?

thats incorrect .;)

None of the 3x remote releases in my image will fit the HS50 on their own

All of the remote releases in the image are RR-80 compatible which have the wrong Mini B USB connector with 6x pin imput/output.

You need to use the short adapter cable that Fuji sells with their RR-80 remote release which they box together and call RR-80A to connect to the HS50

Fuji only sell the special RR-80A adapter cable for the HS50 with their original RR-80 remote release which they call the RR-80A

This is complicated Steve so please read my posts through slowly and carefully .

Very nice! Did you record the distances (roughly), focal length or camera settings?

Thanks,
Ed

Here's the EXIF for
1 Blue tit ISO 200 81.3mm f6.4 1/180
2 Jay ISO 100 63.6mm f6.4 1/125
3 Long tailed tit ISO 100 185mm (full zoom) f6.4 1/200
I am useless at judging distances but I was quite close. The blue tit was taken through double glazing. All three are straight out of camera with no cropping only resizing for the posting.

That's great, Molly. Particularly interesting that you didn't do any cropping. :t:

I'm putting in an order for one early next week, and then will become a member of the club.

especially like the jay - I've seen several birds adopt this posture when being photographed, aware that something is going on

sunshine here as well & I'm down to 2 layers of clothing. hopefully the east wind will swing round to more of a SW direction as forecast next week and we will actually see temperatures in double figures!

goldfinch & robin - excellent, would be well pleased if I had taken these shots

All good pictures from everyone but jipi's robin shows how well the autofocus can cope with birds in amongst branches. Hopefully we'll get some sun here on Wednesday and I can get out with the camera.
