That's pretty much what I have been doing but the available light hasn't exactly been ideal :eek!:

the light has been awful hasn't it :-C

Saying that I much prefer an overcast day for photographing birds than a sunny day .The contrast is just too harsh for good detail and bright parts of the image easily get blown out.

I prefer the first hour after the sun comes up and the last couple of hours as the sun goes down when light is still good but not too harsh and contrasty.

They don't call it the 'golden hour' for nothing :t:

I hope that this is not going too far off-topic ? but I thought it might be amusing to see some of your less than perfect shots with the HS50 .

One day my pistol grip tripod head kept drooping without warning and I got quite a few birds with no heads :-O

What less head-less feet-less tail-less over-under exposed shots have you taken?

My HS50 EXR has just been delivered by the courier from QVC - very impressive delivery time. Getting the battery charged now so hopefully I will be able to try it out in the garden later.

Joms, those sparrow shots have made me think again about dismissing the little tykes. I think I feel a session with the local spuggies coming on.

Amazing what difference a bit more light makes.

EXIF data: Mode -EXR(full auto)
- iso 200 - f5.6 - 1/240sec. - 0 EV - JPEG
exif data says 185mm but I used the intelligent zoom, so I think i used the x2 intelligent zoom but zoomed back to the 35mm equivalant of about 1500mm...... I think !

Hi Keith,

Yep sparrows are my favorite birds to shoot coz they are widely available. Thanks for the comment!

I've added interesting shots of Ring-billed gull here... :t:

well, I got mine yesterday......

As it was marked as "out for delivery, I waited for it to arrive, only to have the status changed to "arrived at depot" In contrast to my previous conversation with QVC I was informed that it could take as long as April 9 to arrive.

A bit of detective work found where it was, and it was agreed that I could collect from the courier's depot, charge in the battery (it didn't last, killed off later by the arctic blast which this part of the country has seen for the past month) but here are 2 of my first shots

nice Siskin shots kenneth . Mine will only eat upside down ... how perverse is that !

Roger good to see that you have got your HS50 as well. Goldfinches are great subjects arn't. they. They'll eat and eat for ages offering some great captures.

Don't forget the Fuji HS50 EXR users group on Flickr. Hope you'll all join and add your images there too.

Managed to get out with the camera for a short while today whilst conducting a terrain survey in preparation for breeding bird surveys starting at end of month. Not much around in the way of birds but did get some nice landscape shots.
The 2 here are taken with Aperture priority.

The Mistle thrush was a good hundred yards away and this is a 50% crop taken at f7.1 1/320 iso 200 and fl 185 into the sun

The Blackbird was only about 30 foot away and again is a 50% crop
taken at f 6.4 1/180 iso 100 and fl 79.4

nice thrush capture Keith , well done. I sometimes find it difficult to focus on small objects on a grass background with the auto focus. Maybe that would be a good opportunity for me to try the manual focus next time .

I've not seen any thrushes in my garden this year yet since the next door development and site clearance destroyed their habitat last year

I'm pleased with how the autofocus picked up the thrush, the cross hairs were slightly larger than the bird in the frame. I was unsure until seeing it on the big monitor whether I'd got a decent picture. Again though I forgot my monopod, I'll have to strap it to my camera bag. The thrush would have been easier if I'd been able to use the monopod.
