Quick question for the guys who have had this camera for a while - the EVF seems to show a very different view from real life. I shot some photo's off at the local lake and the water was bright blue compared to the muddy look in real viewing, is this normal with this type of electronic viewfinder?

Looking at most of the photos posted they are looking a bit soft out of this camera - just checked mine and they seen soft as well.

Bully boy, big crop - the quickness of the focus on this camera is brilliant. Just need to sort out what are the best settings.

Was thinking the same of some of mine - I spent some time, got some good shots ( and chilled to the marrow ), disappoinment catching a siskin cracking a seed open and the husk in mid air, but too soft, changed to S mode and upped the shutter speed.

I notice options to increase the sharpness and noise reduction in the menu - i suppose the best thing to do is try it and see.

I think that my siskin pics lack feather detail - a vast improvement on earlier efforts, just short of being excellent. What do others think?

This camera is capable of producing great results as posted by Molly (Macfudge)

Managed to capture a robin & chaffinch and think the feather detail better - overdue to go out, will post later

BTW I shoot in RAW so I have the data so I can use it at a late date if my PP abilities improve/software improves, do a bit of quick PP in PSE10

My first BIF... and a rather obliging dove, both from late afternoon at Fairburn Ings.

The gull f8 1/500 with -2/3 exposure compensation at iso 200 fl 52.8mm this is about a 30% crop

The dove f8 1/90 with -2/3 exposure compensation at iso 200 fl 185mm no cropping with this

Great pics!

Great to see you are enjoying the HS50 as I am. Great pics!

Here's some recent ones.

GSW ISO800 185mm 6.4 1/180
Jay ISO100 102.9mm 5.6 1/350
Magpie ISO 100 130mm 6.4 1/100

I am posting some images to the gallery now and again. The more I use the camera the better I like it.

I have been messing about with the camera this morning and found out that the intelligent zoom will not work if you shoot in raw, or any combination with raw. :C

It does state, in the manual, I think that digital zoom will only work at max 8mp resolution, this was one of the first questions I asked re the HS50 as the HS20 has had comments made about it, that the EXR is the advanced mode, but will only work at max 8mp. so its a 8mp camera. Similarly, the HS1 digital zoom will only work at reduced resolution and no RAW

Not sure about you but this camera is just not blowing me away like I thought it was going to.

I have had the Canon SX30 and SX40 in the past (hated the EVF). I am now thinking of getting my money back and giving the SX50 a try as for me the IQ is better and its cheaper. Plus its a much simpler camera to use IMO - but not as nice in the hand as the Fuji.

Going out again this afternoon, so will give it another run out. DO love the AF speed and feel mind you :t:

I do not have this Camera but just about every bird shot I have seen taken with it looks fairly soft - almost looks as if the in-camera noise reduction is too aggressive and is killing any fine detail. Is there no way of turning-off or significantly reducing the noise reduction? (and then applying it selectively in post processing if needed).

there is indeed noise reduction in the main menu, can be set to either 0, +2 or -2. so will try -2 to see if this improves matters.

am having the issue that images look fine in camera but soft when uploaded to computer

Hi Roy,

I only shoot in raw and have the noise reduction set at zero which I believe is none. I have just been out and shot about 100 photos's of birds on feeders at about 15ft. Virtually all are soft. NOT impressed at all and most likely will be returning it.

I think the AF is not quite as good as they make out, as I had lots of trouble trying to get focus this afternoon on a bullfinch which should of been totally straight forward, but it just would not af until I moved away and tried to re focus again.

I know I had to pump my old SX40 when the contrast was poor, but this boy should be nailing it.

I better go and read the returns policy. Will post a few photo's later with no sharpening for every one to see.

I will try tomorrow in JPG fine and see if that is any better.

Here are a random bunch all exif details should be with them - different shutter speeds. Some could be movement but at 1400 speed it aint gonna be that.

I have a few nice ones as well. Of course I can get them to look better in PP

Just resized to 900x675 and saved as a jpeg.

IS it ME being crap at taking pictures, or is it the camera. Please let me know

Here is one I like that I adjusted in camera raw as a tiff file and then sharpened up in photoshop. I have had to resize it in windows for some reason.

IT still looks a little soft to me on my pc screen.
