Gadwall with plumage abnormality (1 Viewer)

Well-known member
Male Gadwall with a thick bright white ring at the base of the neck, very reminiscent of the corresponding feature of a drake Mallard. In other respects the bird appears to be a typical Gadwall, without other anomalous features. I've seen indistinct traces of similar rings on Gadwall in the past, but never anything this pronounced & I wonder how common they are? I waded through the description of the species in BNA online but there was no mention of the phenomenon.
