Garden (Yard) List 2012 (1 Viewer)

Bah humbug
Casually walking through the bosom of two Hawthorns, I entered into an open scrubby area whereupon I espied a Redwing sized round ''black blob'', perched perhaps 10' up and 25m away in a young Oak. As I trained my bins...the silhouette morphed into an ''intense'' block of colour..hard white tail tips contrasting against a ginger rest of tail and rump, cloaked in a rich brown mantle and topped with blue grey nape and ginger head looking straight at me! all out of a neutral grey/brown background.

I was struggling to get the camera out of the case and set the zoom...when a dog walker appeared out of nowhere...and off it flew! The moral to this sad tale is when in the field....always be extended :(

Those dead leaves sure can be flighty ...

(Nice one :t: )

All but the Skylark have been in the garden. No flyovers yet, they're not to frequent here. I only had 8 out of a total of 56 for the whole of last year.

The Skylark was singing yesterday in the stubble field next to the garden.

I'm confident that...I won't be seeing 6 out of the 9 listed (and the odds are not good for the remainder)...25 years ago it was a different story!....global warming underlining the North/South divide!

That makes me appreciate what I do see here. I can go back a bit more than 25 years. The only regulars I don't see now are Grey Partridge and Spotted Flycatcher. On the plus side I've gained Sparrowhawk and Common Buzzard. Even saw a Perigrine from the garden last year, the first since '79.

No year additions today...although Redpolls increased to 20..a grdn. record! Redwings on occasion into double figures inside the garden..and triple figures outside, with continuous streaming in 30's, 20's, 10's etc. almost continuously throughout the day. Plus my 4th ever visit of Fieldfare...on the grdn.hedges (threw a dozen apples out this evening, hoping for a photo shoot opportunity tomorrow). In all 21 species in!...and 11 out! Hoping this forthcoming cold snap from Siberia..might just produce something....

Beast from the East
Getting rather cool out there just now - minus 28 C to greet me this morning in the garden. Set to be colder tomorrow. Crested Tits prominent by their absence this morning, I do hope they have not become victims of the cold.

Four Siskins dropping in took the garden total up by one.

Labanoras remains at 17 species

Vilnius

13. Siskin

All other birds puffed out like little tennis balls.

just come home for lunch to see a Mistle Thrush from our front yard, taking the garden list to 41....could it make 50 one day??

on the down side, the overgrown garden next door is being cleared today, and was the only haven in the area for Wren and Robin, so I guess we'll be losing regular sightings of them :-C
