Waterbirds continue to diversify at the Lakes, now Royal Spoonbills have joined the Pacific Black Ducks, Magpie Geese, Little Black Cormorants, Australian White Ibis and various Herons and Egrets.
Couldn't relocate the Green Pygmy Geese from the other day but the long-staying Comb-crested Jacana (the first ever recorded at the Lakes, to my knowledge) was found easily.
No sign of the Radjah Shelducks for the first time in ages. They bred last year and this year took over the hollow in the huge paperbark near Saltwater Creek which recently hosted a pair of Rufous Owls. I wonder where the Shelducks have gone...
No sign either as yet of Whistling Ducks, Grey Teal or something really tasty like Pink-eared Duck.
Today however belonged to BOPs. Peregrine from my study; Brahminy Kite, Eastern Osprey and White-bellied Sea Eagle over my street; but best of all a soaring Pacific Baza sailed past my window looking like an enormous barred butterfly. First time I've seen one this year in my street; I hope they'll nest again at the Botanical Gardens or maybe even closer to home.
105) Pacific Baza.
