Nice Ken... I got a duo y'day... just having to wait till the palmated one is sorted, Sooty Shearwater was the other

Can Newts be counted Jane? ;)

Don't think I'll be getting either of those in the grdn...or flying over come to that.....39 in and 30 out. (was away from home from 7-23rd Aug..prob.missed the ''odd'' migrant), however certainly not complaining..yet!

Now where's that LSW that I haven't seen for a few years?

I did get a Bonxie comprehensively in air space today... as tried to tear a strip off a very stressed Gull

I can remember a long time ago being ''lawn-mower'' engined out to Handa in a (what looked like).. a 6 seater rowing boat (without oars) and watching the Juv.Kittiwakes all around us..suddenly a Bonxie pounced and ''slaughtered'' one..just feet off the port side...a most sobering experience. :-C

The most gruesome thing I ever saw was a Bonxie pitching into a gull flock, knocking over a healthy adult LBBG, and whilst it was on its back it proceeded to stand on its wings and disembowel it while it struggled.

Mmmmm...think it calls for a change of subject.

Joanne..I don't think I'll be catching you..and certainly not H!..who mentioned Tree Creeper and Goldcrest, again for the year.

Interestingly I've only ever had TC once in the garden in 29 years (it's not been for want of looking either), and I'm surrounded by acres of deciduous woodland..they have certainly decreased over the decades in my immediate vicinity..along with so many other species.:-C

White-rumped Sandpiper was in front of my house... I saw people watching it from the setee... but was occupied. Does that count?

What?! White-rumped Sandpiper from the comfort of your living room! What an amazing place you live......

No, she was just watching people watching it - it doesn't count!

(Too casual by half, and not fair either - my target wader species for this winter is Dunlin ...)

Were you watching people viewing outside your abode...whilst you were watching them from your sofa (inside)...whilst you could not see the bird yourself? :smoke:

not this time.... I dind't actually try to see the bird, though light from it undoubtedly fall on my retina in the rear view mirror of the car when I came up the drive. It would have been the 4th.

Trying to get a sound recording of the palmated thing took priority

I do know how lucky I am... I've got a hat-trick of WR Sand, one from the living room, a different one from the bed room and a third from the office.

Maderator.
Not one but two Gull-billed Terns gave me cause for celebration this avo as they drifted over about an hour ago. I may only live a couple of kms from the coast but it makes all the difference when it comes to seabirds and the fact that I just don't see them (I've had no waders whatsoever for example). This makes any I do get a very welcome addition even though this is the commonest tern in Cairns! The calm weather made this decidedly unexpected too.

106) Gull-billed Tern.

A while since I have posted & I have an admission to make. My #50 Australian Raven does not exist in this area :) A little education forces me to revise my #50 to a Torresian Crow. Sorry about that.
54 Peaceful Dove
55 Olive-backed Oriole
56 Tawny Grassbird
57 Mistletoebird
58 Black-faced Monarch
59 Spotted Turtle-Dove
60 Spectacled Monarch
61 Little Shrike-thrush
62 Brahminy Kite
63 Tawny Frogmouth
64 Figbird
65 Straw-necked Ibis

I have a palm outside my window which is attracting the nesting Mistletoe birds. A joy to watch her gather bits while he watches on. I think they're nesting next door, so I might go for a wander through their garden to see.
I finally managed to get a photo worth showing of the bush hen, which I have posted to the gallery. Although still not fabulous, I was quite pleased. Turns out I now have 3 bush hens! I'll keep trying to improve my photography & see what I can come up with.
