Feeling a little fragile this morning, as I watched the rugby in a Geneva pub last night with some emotional Argentines. I drew back the curtains and immediately saw three tiny balls of feathers flitting around on one of our shrubs, the most probable in my list of possibles for the rest of the year, and about time too for what is annual garden bird here:

96 Goldcrest

Maybe I should drink Guinness more often, it brought me 'the luck of the Irish' (or Australians, if we're talking in rugby terms ;))

"Little things mean a lot" :t:

Despite the year nearly being over and that I will be barely be at home for what is left of it, I thought I would try and see how many species I can find from the garden in that time. There isn't much of a garden, however there are decent views of other peoples' gardens and over the city of Brisbane. Birds I've seen so far are:
1. Rainbow Lorikeet
2. Grey Butcherbird
3. Noisy Miner
4. Welcome Swallow
5. Common Myna (only bird actually in the garden!)
6. Torresian Crow
7. Black-faced Cuckooshrike
8. Silvereye
9. Blue-faced Honeyeater
10. Australian Magpie
11. Pied Currawong
12. Spotted Dove
13. Feral Pigeon

It is certainly very different to my previous garden in the Dorset countryside! It will be interesting to see how many birds it produces.

Thanks to Gregor for bringing some bright colours to the Garden List thread!
Two firsts for the garden this week, on Tuesday I was getting my lunch ready when a cheeky fox strolled into the driveway, bold as you like, and proceeded to drink from the birds' water dish, I'm thinking it might be 'Magoo', the short-sighted (or fearless) individual I met in the field a few weeks ago, as he didn't run off until after I'd opened the window and said 'Oi, get orf my laand' (in my best French of course).
But, stranger than that visit, and definitely not on my radar of possible end of year birds, this morning :

97 Common Pheasant

a female wandering around our entrance where I put out seed for passing Chestnut Buntings etc ;)., no.119 for this garden!

Now that's a species that has not graced my abode visually, however a few years ago 200m from my back gate, one walked across the back ride into the hedge. Subsequently many weeks later I heard one call from my bedroom window, joining Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover, Greenshank, Whimbrel, Curlew and Quail as "heard only" for the garden list.

Two Chaffinches in the garden this am, were a real pointer to the Winter ahead, however on the upside!.....a flock of circa 30 plus Greenfinches bounding over yonder tree tops (normally 1-3 of scarce occurence nowadays) was bit of a jaw dropper! although not so this month, with a Hawfinch bounding over yesterday.

Nothing new for me of late, but feeders doing well - three White-backed Woodpeckers in attendance today, two Grey-headed Woodpeckers and an assortment of the more common ones. Also first Willow Tit of the winter, joining the Marsh Tits.

Ken's birds heard-only garden list got me thinking, mine consists of Pygmy, Tawny and Tengmalm's Owls, Red-billed Chough, Golden Oriole, Black Grouse and Stone Curlew.
Brenda, to show solidarity with Gregor, I'll be cheering on the Wallabies on Saturday!

Great stuff, Gregor.

Takes me back to Oz.

I'm sure you'll get loads more before year end.

H

Thanks H, hopefully there'll be a few more. I've seen quite a few others very nearby! Sadly I'm going to be away from home for most of the rest of the year though. Next year should bring a decent total!

I'll actually be cheering on the All Blacks this Saturday! With my Kiwi mother watching it with me, I won't have much say in who to support!
