Welcome to the forum, Mex.|=)| Your sentiments are commendable, but there are many such sentiments expressed on the internet, and especially in this forum. I would guess that the most powerful weapon Government has is letting people believe they have the power to affect change. To a degree, we can change things, but we can't change everything, and it's almost impossible to change what the Government doesn't want to change. As Mike said, most people don't care enough, if at all, about Raptors. In fact many don't care about Wildlife in general. You can't bring in Laws to make people give a damn about Nature. You need Media coverage, TV shows about "cute", "fluffy", animals. You need to grab, and hold, the Public's attention. The BBC has been quite successful at this, but shortly after the series has finished, people go back to watching Eastenders, and worrying about paying the Bills. Am I cynical? Yes, of course I am. Sometimes one person who is loved by the Tabloids gets attention. But as soon as they are out of favour all the good is undone. Look at Heather Mills, she campaigned against, amongst other things, the Fur Trade. She got her picture in the paper, got her point across, and perhaps made people think. As soon as she lost the support of her famous husband, and his Publicists, those she was fighting against got their own back with a vengeance. I'm not saying that she was a good person, but what she was trying to do seemed, to me at least, commendable. My point is that even someone with power, money, and a team of Publicists, can't always change things. (Joanna Lumley was different, we are hearing about soldiers being killed almost daily, so people are already aware of the price paid by those fighting for their Country). The battle for Hearts and Minds is fought in the Media, petitions make people feel that they are doing something. As I said in my first post, based on the fact that nothing has changed, petitions aren't working. We either carry on believing things will change eventually, or we realise that we need a different tactic. We need help from the Media, help from Celebrities, we cannot do it alone. And even with help, apathy can be impossible to defeat. /End cynicism|=)|
