Grand Beach Provincial Park On the way out there seen pairs of Northern Harriers,Red-Tailed Hawks and what I think were American Kestrels. In the yard at the feeders were well over 50 Common Redpolls. They were there throughout the weekend.Could not turn any of them into a Hoary Redpoll.Other birds at the feeders were Hairy Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker,White-Breasted Nuthatch,Black-capped Chickadees have paired up defending territories,Dark-eyed Juncos. At one point seen Hairy Woodpeckers mating and a chickadee excavating a nest hole. Was having a conversation with brothers girlfriend who told me a rumor that a D.c Cormorant and Osprey had been seen by local conservation officers!Way to early, most lakes are still ice covered, and both these birds do not arrive until end of April? So on Friday went for a walk to find these birds.Lots of Canada Geese around including on top of an Osprey platform. My brother and his friend found this funny when they saw the goose there the next day!Black-billed Magpies were the only other species seen as I approached the channel. This was the likeliest place to see the cormorant and osprey. Sure enough there was open water but only geese and Mallards were seen. On Saturday got the bike drivable and went again to the channel. This time there were several Bald Eagles,American Crows,Common Ravens and Herring Gulls feeding on a dead bird near the open water. Also seen here was what I think a Sharp-shinned Hawk. Can't be sure though with my faulty identification skills!Later went with the group for a drive. At the causeway seen a Western Meadowlark which is unusual for this area,a pair of Hooded Mergansers in little bit of open water and a very tame Ruffed Grouse.Just as it was getting dark went for a bike ride to see if any owls were calling.Perfect conditions no wind and a 3/4 moon. But only heard geese and flushed a Killdeer who called in the dark. Around the yard during the day was a Merlin constantly calling and at one point several crows were mobbing a raven. Today before we headed home I checked out the causeway again seeing a lbj but frustratingly not getting an id.He was always moving as I got close! Also at the yard were my brothers first American Robins calling!
