<blockquote data-quote="borealowl47" data-source="post: 1203901" data-attributes="member: 54350"><p><strong>May long weekend!</strong></p><p></p><p>Had a wonderful time doing some intensive birding for 2.5 days</p><p>at Grand Beach.Basically birded from dawn to dusk and managed</p><p>to record 86 species.The weather one the whole cooperated but</p><p>there were some very intense winds,rain,cloudy ,still very cold</p><p>in the morning,but mostly sunny and warm!</p><p>My brother picked me up on Friday at noon and on the way out</p><p>there ,only seen one bird of note a <strong>Turkey Vulture.</strong>Cedar Vale</p><p>(the house) feeders were hopping with birds including many</p><p>Chipping Sparrow,Clay-colored Sparrow,White-crowned Sparrow,</p><p>White-throated Sparrow and Red-winged Blackbirds.My brother</p><p>amused me when he continually tried to get rid of the blackbirds</p><p>by throwing a stick at them.Occasionally coming around through</p><p>the day were Brown Creeper,Hairy Woodpecker,White-breasted</p><p>Nuthatch,Downy Woodpecker and Northern Flicker.Also around</p><p>was a dashing male<strong> Red-breasted Grosbeak,</strong>a female <strong>Purple</strong></p><p><strong>Finch</strong> and flying over Cedar Vale were Double-crested Cormorant</p><p>American White Pelican,Canada Goose and Barn Swallow.Went</p><p>for a walk and a bike.At the beach near the house seen an amazing</p><p>36 Red-breasted Mergansers 21 males courting 15 females!Here</p><p>also were Yellow-rumped Warblers,Palm Warblers,Black and White</p><p>Warblers and a <strong>Common Tern</strong> fishing.Not much to see on my</p><p>bike ride to the channel except a bright <strong>Yellow Warbler.</strong></p><p>Got up bright and early Saturday morning to hear an American</p><p>Robin at 4:30a.m.While drinking my coffee a few Purple Martin</p><p>could be heard overhead and at the feeders were Pine Siskins and</p><p>a Black-capped Chickadee.I then headed out at around 6:00 to the</p><p>causeway were there is extensive marshes and two nice trails,</p><p>Wild Wings and Trans Canada.Near Wild wings trail in the marsh</p><p>was a Song Sparrow chasing a <strong>Lincoln's Sparrow.</strong>In the water</p><p>were Common Loon,Red-necked Grebe,Bufflehead,Blue-winged</p><p>Teal and Common Goldeneye.On the trail flirting around were</p><p>Eastern Phoebe,<strong>Tennessee Warbler,Nashville Warbler</strong></p><p>and many other warblers already mentioned.Further on the</p><p>causeway near the channel were American Coot,Lesser Scuap,</p><p>and Mallard.Foraging on the side of the road was a <strong>Swainson's</strong></p><p><strong>Thrush</strong> and on the TcTrail were a singing Northern Waterthrush</p><p>and Winter Wren.Doubled back to were the TcTrail continues</p><p>and heard a <strong>Marsh Wren</strong> and in some thick brush were <strong>Cape</strong></p><p><strong>May Warbler</strong> and <strong>American Redstart.</strong>A <strong>Fox</strong> could be seen</p><p>coming down the trail and disappeared when it saw me!Arrived</p><p>back at Cedar Vale around 9:00 to find new birds at the feeders</p><p><strong>Harris's Sparrows,</strong>American Goldfich,Tree Swallows investigating</p><p>a nest hole,Blue Jay and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.We all went</p><p>after this to cut some wood were there had been a tornado a few</p><p>years ago.A stubborn Ruffed grouse would not get off the road and</p><p>in between carrying wood might have seen a B.B.Woodpecker and</p><p>Northern Goshawk!Three male <strong>Brown-headed Cowbirds</strong> were</p><p>courting a female.Came back to the house and again new birds at</p><p>the feeders,Common Redpoll,Dark-eyed Junco and Common</p><p>Grackle.Then I went for a afternoon walk along the beach were I</p><p>saw 2 <strong>Western Grebes,</strong>Black-billed Magpie,American Crow,</p><p>Ring-billed Gulls ,<strong>House Wren</strong> and Spotted Sandpiper.And finally</p><p>in the evening went for a bicycle ride to the spit to the south of</p><p>Grand Marias. This place always good for shorebirds!Did</p><p>not disappoint this time either,two <strong>Semipalmated Plovers</strong></p><p>were combing the shoreline.An <strong>Osprey</strong> and Northern Harrier</p><p>were hunting.On an ice flow resting were <strong>Bonaparte's Gulls</strong></p><p>and the best bird of the weekend were 6 <strong>Tundra Swans</strong> heading</p><p>north!Before it got really dark flushed a Mourning Dove as I</p><p>headed to Cedar Vale.</p><p>Went early Sunday morning to find <strong>Piping Plovers</strong> and was not</p><p>disappointed when I found two near the channel!On the way</p><p>there a <strong>Brown Thrasher</strong> was singing along with a Ruby-crowned</p><p>Kinglet.Other birds at the channel were Herring Gulls,Common</p><p>Raven,Belted Kingfisher and hard to identify <strong>Solitary Sandpipers</strong></p><p>,they were far off!On my return to Cedar Vale seen a Redhead,</p><p>Merlin and a empi.flycatcher.More surprises at the house a</p><p><strong>Pileated Woodpecker</strong> and a <strong>Balitimore Oriole</strong> investigating</p><p>some red on a feeder.My last new bird of the weekend was a <strong>Grey</strong></p><p><strong>Catbird!</strong></p><p>Went golfing later in the day and then headed home.Hope to beat</p><p>this list next time I go,still a lot of great places to explore!</p><p></p><p></p><p>Darrell</p><p>-new birds of the year in caps</p><p><a href="http://www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/parks/popular_parks/grand_beach/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/parks/popular_parks/grand_beach/index.html</a></p></blockquote><p></p>
