Ive had great tits nest in my garden box (here in NE England) for the past couple of years; but this year has been my first opportunity to watch the events inside, thanks to having a camera installed. Whilst everything seems to be going to plan, I’m a little perplexed by the mother who - once an hour or so - will decide to keep her chicks warm/protect them by placing herself in the “incubation” position and then suddenly decide to have a couple of minutes pecking the area of the nest/box directly underneath where the chicks are. This can result in some strange/funny/unusual pictures, whereby the mum is upside down, hammering away at the wood, whilst some of the chicks decide it’s feeding time (again) and rear their necks and heads up through mum’s feathers and outstretched wings.
I have no idea what she is doing and why - and would therefore be very grateful if anyone could solve my query. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
