Any thoughts on this one? I'm thinking juvenile Yellow-whiskered Greenbul although the back is a bit brown and it seems to have something of a grey head with a darker cap. Or maybe it's some sort of Robin, though the bill seems a bit long. It was taken about a month ago.

Also, while I remember it, I had four or five small birds in the canopy from the observation tower at Kakamega that I saw close up but could not identify at all. They were flycatcher like, slaty-grey with red eyes and perched quite vertically. Can't figure out what they were at all.

Oh and I saw a drake Mallard Duck flying over the marsh just NE of Eldoret - apparently extremely rare for Kenya, assuming it was genuinely wild.

It's a shame! My first thought was along the lines of Scaly-breasted Illadopsis but those legs are a little too pink, more like Brown-chested Alethe, except there is no obvious super for that species....

Its been a long time, I'm sure Tib's and crew will be along soon.

Just found this thread...

It's an Illadopsis, as suggested by Mark. It's not an easy photo and the Illadopsis genus can be extremely tough to ID in the gloomy forest interior.
However in this case the pink legs are a strong indication of Scaly-breasted Illadopsis, add to that the impression of a faint whitish supercilium (a feature shared with Brown illadopsis) and dirty off-white throat (usually cleaner white in Brown) and I think we are pretty safe with Scaly-breasted.
The only other Illadopsis to be expected in Kakamega is the Pale-breasted illadopsis, not a contender in my opinion.

Many thanks.
