My social graces have taught me it’s always polite to introduce oneself when joining an online group such as this lovely one dedicated to wild birds. So Hi there, I’m Alpine and I live in The Woodlands, Texas.my apologies for the length of this post. Have no fear, I’ll not be in the habit of posting long threads like this again in the future.

I have joined this group to learn if anyone has an understanding of the Hummingbirds that migrate thru The Woodlands, Texas (a community 40 miles north of Houston).

I know very little about these sweet little birds. Other than the incredibly wonderful experience we had with them last October of 2023.

What I have read is that they come this way at the beginning in March. But yet in October, we had no less than 30 birds in our yard every morning and throughout the day visiting our 15 feeders, yes, I went a lot overboard with feeders, but I think it’s why we had so many birds everyday. They stayed with us thru the end of November and a couple even stayed and hung out with us thru the winter. I certainly learned a great deal about their BIG personalities. A couple were extremely territorial, sitting on what they considered to be “their” feeder, and screaming at any other bird that came close.

We had a few sit on our finger while we held a feeder, and I learned just how much they squabble with one another, we even got to see them swoop in and gobble up flying insects right in front of our eyes! WOW, that was like watching nature T.V. LIVE., and now I know and recognize their voices and can hear them in the trees in our neighborhood, but sadly, no more.

Because now it’s October 2024, and at one point we had maybe 7 hummers visit us for a week or two, and I felt so happy to see them, anxiously waiting for their buddies to show up too, but, sadly, they now seem to be all gone. I have looked and looked AND looked again, to see if anyone has an explanation, while I keep hoping the little buggers are going to show up, but for now I just feel sad everyday.

I know it’s a long shot, but does anyone know anything? Like are they stuck somewhere due to strong head winds or are they getting battered by storms, did the Hummingbird Fairy pick them all up for herself, ugh, selfish hummingbird fairy needs to learn how to share!

I know, I know, I myself have been selfish by crying out all my hummingbird woes on to your shoulders, and I apologize and sincerely say I’m sorry. But if by chance you know anything, like where that selfish hummingbird fairy is, please share. I promise no harm will come to her.

God Bless,
Alpine

In the meantime, if you like puppies, meet Bert and Ernie, our five month old Maltese puppies, who have yet to learn you pee 𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐒𝐈𝐃𝐄!
Yikes, how do I make this pic smaller, posting it in this size just makes me look really obnoxious.

Hi Alpine and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. Sorry I can't answer your question, and if no-one else comes in with an answer for you, it might be an idea to post in the Information Wanted forum, which will reach a wider audience.

I've re-sized your picture for you. All I did was to click on it and then re-sized it from the bottom right corner. The other way to post your image is to use the Attach Files option at the bottom of the message pane, which will show a thumbnail of the image. Members can click on that to get a larger size.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Hi, welcome to the forum. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group. Weather plays a large part in migration and migration paths. This could be happening this year in your area, hopefully your numbers will pick up soon.
