Afternoon out with my old man today. Headed to Gwenffrwd Dinas. Busy in Llandovery- didn’t realise the Eisteddfod was on.
The reserve itself was stunning. Quite a few birds singing despite the time of the day. Ended up with great views of Wood Warbler, Pied Flycatchers, Redstarts and a Spotted Flycatcher. Can’t recommend this reserve enough in Spring.

Cracking day out in Pembs with Rob and Nerys yesterday. Walked around the Gann and the Deer Park. Finished off with an evening boat trip around Skomer - £28 p/person and well worth it.
Great views of Chough at the deer park and distant views of all of Skomer’s seabirds. From the boat though we were treated to close up views of thousands of Puffins, Guillemots and Razorbills. A few hundred Manxies and a decent number of Kittiwakes and Fulmar. At Marloes Rob got some great footage of a very showy Sedge Warbler.
Only downside of the trip was the bus not getting me all the way home. Managed to get off the A48 by the Botanical Gardens and call the AA. Appears the alternator has gone.

Fingers crossed Julie. The car is not worth anything but to be fair, it’s been amazingly reliable. The first time in 16years it’s left us stranded.
Yeah I think so. I think the alternator is c£200. Not sure about fitting though.

Alternators used to be easy to fix, even I managed in my youth with an old Ford Escort - just a couple of bolts then move back into position to stretch the fan belt around...problem is engines have got a lot more complex and less accessible, so it's going to be more what they have to take out in order to access it..
Local garage doing it on Monday KB. It’s really in an awkward place so was quite pleased with £390. It’s probably what the car is worth but it’s generally so reliable it’s worth having it done.
Brilliant day out with Bud and OH today. Started with a sausage and bacon roll from my favourite greasy spoon outside Llangadog and is now ending with sharing a bag of Roast Beef Monster Munch Giants with Bud.
Inbetween we saw Ospreys North of Aberystwyth and at Tregaron were heaps of Damselfly and Dragonflies. Around Llyn Brianne we had Siskin, Lesser Redpoll, Wheatears and Whinchat. Lots of Red Kites everywhere as well.

Managed to get a couple of hours birding in this afternoon. First time since the end of June. Great to catch up with Rob as well.
Headed to Goldcliff. Dipped on the Pec Sand that had been seen in the morning but did add Yellow Wagtail to the year list.

The Magnolia was an absolute stunner of a bird. Thought I was going to miss my opportunity to see it because, of all things, the Next Sale!!!!! The OH can be very unreasonable sometimes😂
Dipped on Canada Warbler. But that was my issue with crowds in small spaces. Every birder was absolutely great - calling directions etc. But after 20 mins my tolerance level had gone. Did have an issue with a couple of locals. A few birders had parked on the lane (you could still easily get through). Despite us telling them we’d parked in the car park they felt we were responsible for our “colleagues”. Their language was quite choice. In the end we just laughed at them and ignored them. Came across as a pair of right entitled Tory voting wazzocks!!
Also had a brilliant day out with Owen. Despite dipping what we were after, and despite getting soaked through to my pants (I was wearing shirts and a t-shirt), it was great just to be wondering around Dale Runway and the Deer Park in good company.

Absolutely gorgeous day on the Somerset levels today. Parked up at Sharpham Lane and got chatting to a few birders from Bath, South Bristol and Abergavenny. All of us waiting for the same bird. After about 40 minutes a fisherman walked along the path and put up our target bird. Been waiting a long time to see a Squacco Heron and we were treated to some good views of it in flight. The field it flew over was crawling with Cattle Egret as well - not a common bird here in South Wales.
Decided then to have a relaxing birding session around Ham Wall/ Shapwick Heath. Relatively quiet tbh bird wise but had good views of Marsh Harriers and Great White Egrets. Ham Wall remains one of my favourite reserves. Feels like every time I say hello to somebody they ask me what part of Wales I’m from. One word. Didn’t realise my accent was that strong🤣🤣
