Hello I struggle with Ids of Gulls especially from underneath these photographs were taken last week in Ouistreham can I have Ids please,
the last three are the same bird.
My first thought was they were both Herring Gulls but on the first bird no wing colour can be seen the bird on the post I can see Pink Legs but the wings look to dark unless the light is playing tricks. I have put both pictures onto Merlin so I'm not sure on either. I have just checked my pictures from my last visit to Ouistreham maybe the first picture is a Yellow Legged Gull very similar to a previous photograph I took.
In days gone by, I would have said that all 4 are fine for herring gull. These days, I don't touch big gulls.
You can see upperwing colour in pic 1. Mantle colour in pic 2 looks OK given the lighting.
And I wouldn't trust Merlin as far as I could throw it with big gulls.
