hi alex,

this is the type of post to scare all people away...1. gulls (!), 2. 26 different ind. in one post!
i'll run through the images and tell you my impressions without going too much into detail yet:

fuscus-type: can't tell from that pic, but rear end (wing tips etc) doesn't look very extended and i think baltic gull would be rel. unlikely, so even with much better pics there would be some doubts. with this pic i can't even tell if it is a fuscus.

1. on pattern looks like a cachi but i'd have liked to see its bill and head structure from the side
2. 3cy micha
3. 2cy micha (with slim bill and pale head)
4. 2cy micha with very cachoid scaps (but bill black and blunt tipped, body shape, tertial pattern, etc)
5. another 2cy micha i guess since i think most coverts are replaced but would like to see more views of it.
6. micha
7. micha
8. 3cy micha (could go as armenian if it was in turkey ;))
9. micha
10. this could well be a caspian but it's not easy to tell
11. another micha - note the very typical short and high bill with strongly curved upper mandible at tip ("blunt tipped bill")
12. can't tell for sure, can be either.
13. micha
14. micha
15. yes, micha
16. yet another micha
17. 3cy micha. herring is less advanced in 2nd winter and has a more diffuse tertial pattern
18. yes, a retarded 3cy micha (long wings, contrasting coverts pattern, rel. solid blackish tertial centers)
19. 3cy male cachinnans (at last!)
20. 3cy micha
21. 3cy micha
22. 2cy micha
23. has at least 6 replaced coverts and long wings, so can't be a HG. probably a micha due to coarse GC-pattern but some things reminding of cachi - bill, scap pattern, tertial crescents.
24. difficult but could well be herring: scap pattern, structure, pale bill base are good for herring but primaries look very blackish and lack obvious pale tips, tertials are also more of the micha-type.
25. micha
26. 4cy micha

best,

Hi Lou!!!! Thanks a lot, especially for you patience :)) You're always so helpful.
Well, the important thing is that my posts dont' scare YOU away :)

As for the n° 8....don't be scared...go for Armenian! ah ah :))
All joking aside, why can't an armenian happen accidentally here in Italy?
Rarities are called rarities for this reason, aren't they? :)

As for the n° 23...I don't know what is...but it doesn't look like a micha at all..

23 might be a cachi after all,
armenian is 'out' because it hasn't safely been recorded in western europe, apparently striktly movong towards south, hardly any further west than crete in the aegean - but of course italy might have its first armenian soon. it's just - how do you pic it out of the michs B :)

Gull ID

Yes, Lou is always helpful and very knowledgeable about Gulls. He's helped me a number of times.
